Am I nuts?

My old habit of perusing craigslist is back in full swing. I found a set of Polk Monitor 7's with the silver coil tweeter that look to be in pretty good shape that are about 4hrs away. When the seller gets back with me on a price and if its less then $30.00 I am thinking about going and looking at them. I need more speakers like I need a hole in the head, am I nuts for driving 4hrs to go look at them?

I would say you are nuts if it is 4 hours 1 way. Kind of a wash if its 4 hours round trip, you are bored, and you want to play with some fun speakers. But I think it should be cracklist.org. when "craigslook" used to work i would search my entire area routinely. Drove 4 hours for my SDA 2.3s and 4 hours for an RT5000p set. Even drove 3 hours for an RT800/ RT 55 ht set up that I repaired and resold. Have fun!

Drive 4 hours for $30.00 speakers? You're nuts for even thinking about it.screwy.gifIf you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I love driving. I am big fan of audio books, driving is about the only time I get to listen to them any more.
As far as the Monitor 7's I didnt know if they were worth it. I love my SDA 1c's, which I will be happily using again tonight:cheesygrin:, but I would like something a little smaller for the bedroom. I had to pull some gear out of rotation to properly run the SDA's so now I want to create a bedroom setup.Speakers: TL Monitor 10s, RTA 11TLs, Fortes, Thiel CS 1.2

would it be much cheaper to ship them? yep, you're way beyond nuts

Monitor 7's come up pretty frequently. Not worth a 4 hr round trip.

Thanks for all the comments, I will probably pass on the monitors. This time year I get cabin fever pretty bad. I am an out doorsman at heart and most of my main interests start in the spring and last till the fall. My remedy for this is usually to go ice fishing and listen to my music while I tinker. With the warm spells we have had here in Indiana I dont trust the ice being thick enough so I find myself really tinkering with my audio equipment. I really want to tinker with my SDA's but I am trying to hold off and listen to them stock.Speakers: TL Monitor 10s, RTA 11TLs, Fortes, Thiel CS 1.2

Buy the kit to upgrade the crossovers. You can fully assemble them short of mounting them and have them ready to go.
I can relate to the cabin fever thing. It's why my wife is getting angrier each day when I bring home some new piece of audio gear."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

4 hours for 7's? You are nuttier than squirrel turds if you do that! Now if it were SDA's, LS70/90...along those lines then yeah I would go for it.
Also, about those kits on ebay. I would not go that route. I would order caps from Madisound or PE.--Gary--

Until you can fill your living room with speakers, you're not nuts yet. ;-)

I look at it this way. M-7s, a "classic" definitely worth a lot more than $30. If it were me, I'd work out a deal with the owner (if he is trustworthy) to pre-pay for these and have him "hold" till I could find an excuse to plot my way 4 hours on a trip where I was getting a lot of other things done on the way there and back. Where picking up the speakers becomes "secondary" and not the main reason for the trip. I've done this with a guy about 2 1/2 hours way. It took me 2-3 months to actually pick the speakers up. In the end he actually had a business trip half way to me so I took my daughter to the big city about 1 hour 10 minutes away and we did the exchange in a parking lot.
You have to get creative. And it depends on how badly you want to hear something. I was lucky, my 7s were only 30 minutes away. But my SDA's made it from Lightman's (N.C.) house, to Noah's in Pa., to Maine (it took months to arrange for that and Russ was only too happy to ferry them to Pa. which is where I was visiting family and friends and could do the pick up! And Russman was driving up to a local Polk get together at Noah's where I got to meet a number of Polkies while I was looking over the SDAs and listening to a lot of other cool stuff. Win, win!

I drove 3 hours each way for my LS90's. Worth every mile...
-
4 hours each way? For a pair of 7s? I wouldn't drive to Boston for a pair, and that's only 90 miles from me. A cherry pair of SDAs would be another matter.Home Theater/2 Channel:

I can concur: Monitor 7 and a four hour one-way trip? Nah, that's too nutty even for me. Full disclosure: I have made a 1350 mile round trip for a pair of 1.2TLs. Total cost of fuel/trip/speakers? $1200 and my time. That's nutty enough.SDA SRS, SDA SRS1.2TL, SDA-1C,SDA 2B, Soundcraftsmen Amplification (A5002s, MA5002s, MA5002As)

its the passion that drives you.

I've realized that it's all about having no regrets.
If you think you will be fixated and kicking yourself still a month or years down the road for not getting them, thats something toconsider. If you think you'll forget about them shortly, then let em go.
4 hours is a trek for sure. But I have had speakers that I've missed out on and have checked various craigslists everyday for oneand a half years hoping to come across them again.
The scary part is I was at a point where any good deal I would grab and before you know it, you have too many speakers to deal with. I could make any excuse not to sell them. Making cuts is a hard thing to do.
A little bit of me dies every time I sell a pair of speakers but I'm over that now and have learned to be more selective in my purchases. I am slowly selling parts of my collection. -
I guess I probably should weigh in on what I decided to do since I started this post in January of this year. I decided to let the Monitor 7s go. Spending that much time in car just seemed to ridiculous for a pair of monitor speakers, a pair of of large SDAs would of been a different matter all together.Speakers: TL Monitor 10s, RTA 11TLs, Fortes, Thiel CS 1.2
