Aside from the idea of women's make-up that comes to mind reading the title  I'm curious about something. I love my 12s but I really like the all black veneer of the A9s especially on the front around the speakers. The silver of the 12s is fine, but that black just looks sweet. Wonder how difficult it would be to paint the fronts to match the sides?? What kind of paint could you use? Anyone with any thoughts or done something like this?

Well I was hoping for more tips and input than a paint color but I'll look it up.

It's not too difficult painting things, just use very good paint...automotive quality. More interestingly though, just last week while ordering stuff from parts express I spied some very nice black vinyl veneer that is self-adhesive. It comes in rolls 2'x8' and looks like it would match the chassis on my old Polk RT 2000p's which need the same "facelift." Good luck, please report back with progress and pictures.

My favorite "cheap" finish for a speaker is truck bed liner...

It gives a nice texture, its durable and its BLACK :)

It is also easy to apply (roller)

I actually just painted a speaker with this - on the final coat I did a 80 grit sand and then painted it black and it turned out awesome!

It all matters of how close of a match your looking for. If you keep the grills off and want a close match, I would pass if I was a novice. If you just want them black then go for it. I haven't refinished speakers but just have about painted everything else. It all comes down to the quality you're looking for. If you want to keep the wood grain appearance, abrade the surface lightly to provide adhesion however don't sand to much too lose the texture. Surface prep is usually critical. Also depending on the paint used and amount that you put down, you can completely lose the texture (wood grain) that is apparent in the wood. A textured bed liner coating will not look like the current paint on the sides and top of the speaker. It does look good if you're not trying to match the rest of the speaker. Matching the gloss level is a whole other ball game. If your hell bent on this I can tell you how to do this. Also, the selection of what kind of paint is determined by what you're looking for.
