Pot for Sunfire

'ello,

Does anyone know off the top of their head what the part numbers for the volume pot on the TGP3 is?

At risk of turning this to a cable debate...what changes will the different pot materials create?

On a serious note...The volume pot went **** up on my pre. Where's the best place to get one and htf do you know which one to get?

FWIW I tried to clean the pot in my pre to fix it and now it no longer works :razz: So definitely not afraid to divulge.

No pot at all in fact. It is called a rotary encoder for those, like myself, that did not know before. I am assuming not many do or there would be more than 9 hits on "rotary encoder" in the search. Either way...good info. I guess i never tried to turn it all the way up, or down, and thus was unaware that it has no stopping point. Now where did it put those static slippers and ankle strap?

One a lighter note...the wife did say, "Well, You did buy it used. Probably time to start looking for a replacement"!

She did this with the washer and dryer about 2 months ago...a 5 dollar bushing took a **** and bought a new set before I could fix it (read- brought a new set home that night). I fixed the washer for $7.89 and about 15 minutes of my time then sold them to a college student in need of a used set. They were only 3 years old for crying out loud! Ah well, she wants nice things too so I don't say much when she does go shopping. I bet she will have something to say about the next pre and it's dent in ye ol' pile 'o gold than her washer and dryer did muahah!

Thats what I have in my pre. One very identical to what you posted.

Did you just buy a replacement? Any idea as to what the goop is used inside these? Mine was not smoothly going up or down. However I cleaned mine and left NO residue of whatever gunk was in there.

I am not sure the lube is for anything beyond the shaft lol. the contacts were dry and I assume they need to stay that way based on the closeness of the fingers on the pickup. Any dielectric grease at all could bridge those contacts. If that's bad? I don't know. To be forthcoming here...I am about to sell the oppo and 425 and buy the sc68 and the elite Bdp. But haven't talked the wife into the hiatus of the main rig till they sold.

I use one of them rotary encoders on my Arduino controlled DIY DAC to cycle through the menus. I added hardware debounce and believe it works better than software debounce. (Hardware cancels the noise spikes created by turning/making selections). Encoders have different specs or feel. That is cycles per turn, can have a built in switch and rotary clicks. My personal fav is a discontinued Panasonic EVQ-WTEF2515B. Bourns PEC11 is a close second.:cheesygrin:

I used the current version of what is considered an ALPS 043n. With the old one I could hear a slight blip when changing the channels and raising volume with the remote but didn't recognize it as an encoder issue. That blip was entirely eliminated and the noise floor seemed to soften but I won't attest to it being more than my perception. Just a first reaction and what I noticed. I also noticed a decrease in radio static for what ever reason. I have read it is possible bu I cannot explain the why . There are 24 detents in the one I used but for the tightness and smoothness of the dial you would think it wan infinite. I did read the thread about your DIY DAC. I bet that piece sounds awesome!.

I think I posted this in my DAC thread. This is a scope print of what happens when an encoder is turned. Software debounce is where they write delay in the code, hardware uses parts to suppress it.



Thanks for the kind words. The DAC is the closest I ever heard digital sound truly analog. There are many levels of DIY DAC's to fit any budget. Aside from power and analog stages, focus is on the lowest jitter input, sometimes by reclocking the source clock at destination. For folks that don't want to DIY, look into a good USB to DDC (Digital to Digital Converter) that reclocks the SPDIF signal before passing it off to a DAC. The better the source clock, the better the digital SQ.
