SDA SRS to SRS 1.2tl conversion

Greetings. This is my very first post. I just acquired a pair of SDA SRS's from EBay. I paid $910 for the speakers and $500 to ship. When it was all said and done, I would estimate that it costs about $600 to ship with packaging plus the hassle of dealing with freight shipping. FYI for those who have ever wondered.
I would like to know what it would entail to upgrade these speakers to the 1.2tl's. Is this a practical endeviour? First issue I see is that there is a cabinet upgrade from the SRS to the SRS 1.2 and SRS 1.2tl. Does anyone know exactly what the upgrades were and if that is something I could apply to my SRS cabinet. I know there are plenty other things to consider.

You cannot upgrade the SRS's to 1.2 or 1.2tl's..
I would still upgrade them though..

Why not? Will the MW6511's not fit into the MW6503 holes? The RDO198's not fit into the SL2000 holes. Cannot I get complete TL1.2 crossovers/kit with Gimrod PCB? What am I overlooking? Are there any good mods I can or should make?

Yea you can, I think that he was thinking that you just wanted to change the tweeters and just modify the crossovers. Which generation are yours at? Look on page 4-5-6 of the Handbook. I for one, am looking forward to see your progress and help anyway I can on what I call a down to the cabinet level upgrade. Why not? Will the MW6511's not fit into the MW6503 holes? You can do most anything with enough money. You have some excellent speakers there, why not enjoy them for a while? If you wanted 1.2TLs, it would have probably been cheaper to just buy 1.2TLs.
What is the size of the room you plan to use them and what is the rest of your gear?Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)
Preamp: Joule Electra LA-150 MKII SE
Amp: Wright WPA 50-50 EAT KT88s
Analog: Marantz TT-15S1 MBS Glider SL| Wright WPP100C Amperex BB 6er5 and 7316 & WPM-100 SUT
Digital: Mac mini 2.3GHz dual-core i5 8g RAM 1.5 TB HDD Music Server Amarra (memory play) - USB - W4S DAC 2
Cables: Mits S3 IC and Spk cables| PS Audio PCs -

No one sells a kit. You would have to replace all the inductors, caps and resistors, rewire the SDA circuit and make changes to the cabinets. So, to answer your question as to whether it is a practical endeavor? Not even close.Political Correctness'.........defined

Yes it would be almost at the bare (some changes?) cabinet level. An interesting endeavor but whether it would be worth the expenditure vs maximizing what you already have is somewhat questionable IMHO.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

welcome to the forum.
I think you will find, as mentioned above, that it would not be easy or even possible to make those into a fully proper set of 1.2TL's and it might even be cheaper to wait for some to come along for sale.
With that said, don't be disappointed with what you already have. That is a great pair of speakers IF it fits your listening room and you have the right gear running them. Now add the mods and tweaks found here on the forum and you should be very happy with those bad boys.
What gear are you using? Room size? -

The SRS 1.2 was a complete redesign of the SRS. The 1.2 cabinet is not an upgrade of the SRS cabinet, it is an entirely different cabinet design, therefore no upgrade path is possible. The 1.2TL is an upgrade of the 1.2 and Polk used to sell a conversion kit.Why not? Will the MW6511's not fit into the MW6503 holes? The RDO198's not fit into the SL2000 holes. Yes, you can put 1.2TL drivers, tweeters and crossovers in an SRS cabinet, but I advise against it. The higher bass resonance of the SRS cabinet might not, and probably won't, play well with the 1.2TL components. Then again, you might like it.
As others have advised, I recommend optimizing the SRS rather than trying to turn the SRS into something it was not intended to be. I have both the SRS and the SRS 1.2TL and am thrilled with both. Here are a couple of threads on improvements for the SRS:

Elvis has not left the building. Just doesn't come online too much.
Anyway. I would like to thank ALL of you for your advice and help.
My room size is aprox. 20' x 20'.
I have all Carver. C-19 preamp, TMX-55 power amp, SDA 490t CD player, and TX-12 tuner. Contemplating a Technic SL1200 when I come across a good deal.
I think at this point I will just enjoy the speakers for what they are and I am very happy with them. The reason I sought them out was because I knew they were excellent speakers and I was planning to flush mount the speakers into a false wall when I build my house in the next year or two.
Now I have my gears turning. I have not taken the speakers apart, YET. I would like to check out to see exactly how these cabinets have been built. I am a carpenter with some woodworking experience. Wondering why not build better cabinets with the same internal dimensions and driver layout, mount the crossover networks externally to eliminate the big hole in the front of the cabinet, and use thicker wood with external reinforcements. Crazy I know. But hell that's why it is called a hobby, right? -
Just Dave!!!! Just Don't!!!!!

Really, really bad idea.and use thicker wood with external reinforcements.
For starters, the cabinets are not wood.Political Correctness'.........defined

Okay guys. Point well taken. Thank you all from saving my speakers from becoming murder victims.
But the 1.2 cabinets are not even made of wood? What are they made of then? -

Look at the recommended placement settings for SDA's and build your room around optimizing speaker placement rather than building them into the room or forcing them into a configuration that doesn't let them sound their best.____________________________________________________________

As many have said; it would not be a practical endeavor to make the conversion suggested. It could be done but as also has been said you could purchase 1.2TL's cheaper. I also have both models and both sound great. Both have details that are better than the other and both have details that are not as good as the other. Mods to the SRS make a HUGE difference without even replacing any drivers at all. Then replacing the tweets make that much more from what other say ( I have not personally done so to either of these models). Start with the caps and resistors with no other alterations to the crossover circuit design first, then progress to tweets, inductors, dynamat, binding posts, circuit boards, gaskets, rings/ hurricane nuts, and the list can go on and on.
There are other alterations that can be done to the circuits that i will not get into here as it may be considered a mortal sin around these parts. Just study the schematics and driver specs, etc. Just remember that any changes made can alter the sound either direction for you personally so make one change at the time and listen so if you need to undo something that had a negative effect, you can do so easily.
the SRS cabinet is stronger in many ways to the 1.2TL cabinet but also has different resonances.
Don't downplay the the SRS in any way it is a great speaker, and with mods common to that model it can be much better. Enjoy and have fun. Listen to them a while first so you are familiar with how they sound before you start any mods and can appreciate the improvements better. If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of Progress?!
