I read that "Rolling Stone" mag readers voted EVHs "Eruption" as best guitar solo of all time. Not sure I agree but I am a big fan of Clapton. Maybe he is too obvious of a pick on this thread. Derek Trucks can also WAIL!

+1 to David Gilmore. He could say more with a couple notes than other guys could say with 100.

Someone has to nominate Robert Fripp, and I'd like to be that someone.

Not everyone's cup of tea, sure, but those of us who enjoy his work...enjoy it very much.

Any love for Mick Taylor? "Time Waits for no one" and or "Sway".

I listen to a LOT of Grateful Dead and Jerry could hold his own with anybody. Off the top of my head his solo on "Uncle Johns Band" Dick's Picks Vol. 5, Oakland, CA 12/26/79

"On The Bus", Zappa on Joe's Garage

Things like "best" and "favorite" are so hard to assign. But I really need to show some more love for Jerry. There's a version of Hard to Handle on Fallout From The Phil Zone. That one song is the only track that the Dead ever released commercially that was sourced from an audience tape, because its just that freakin good. The quality of the audience tape is really good, or they never could have pulled off releasing it. As you're listening to it you think, hmmm, it's a pretty good Hard To Handle. But then as soon as the solo kicks in you just say, "OH! Wow....." Jerry in his prime was tough to not love.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I think a great solo that rarely gets mentioned is Jimmy Lyon's solo on Two Tickets to Paradise.

That is a great one. To many to list for me...One sleeper for me is the solo on Styx's Grand Illusion...

Though not a fan of the music I think many have forgotten one player in particular. His name Chet Atkins I bet he has forgotten more about guitar playing than all the others combined.
Jerry Reed is one other both he and Chet played on many many other artist's records for along time.

A quiet solo by F Zappa that is very nice but short that many people have never heard is "Sleep Dirt".

Oh jeez, speaking of nice but short...the 2nd solo in Steely Dan's "Your Gold Teeth II". I'm pretty sure it's Denny Dias.

There's a couple of solos toward the end of the track. I think they're both by Denny...first he plays a cool little solo, and then everyone quiets down a bit, and he comes in again with a quieter solo, less gain on the guitar, with a beautiful little run right in the middle...lovely little bit of work.

I thought I was familiar with all the Zappa tunes, but the day he died NPR was giving a short tribute to him and they played the complete "Sleep Dirt" tune.

Nice but short in another Steely Dan cut is "Third World Man"- beautiful.

The original "Heart of Stone". No credits on the cover, but my money is on Brian Jones.

Whoever did the solos on The Kinks "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night". I don't think it was brother Dave.

Some good ones mentioned, and a few I had not heard but have now, thanks to youtube.

Gary Richrath's solo (REO Speedwagon) on Golden Country live is a good few minutes of wailing:

(it starts about the 3 minute mark if you don't want to listen to the whole thing)

Some great answers here. I'm a Gilmour fan as well. And now for something completely different: Go to YouTube and type in Roy Clark. Yes, that Roy Clark of Hee Haw fame. Check out Malaguena. The guy had these chubby little fingers but could he ever play guitar!
