H/K Stuck on 2 channel

Hey guys,
I recently bought an AVR 154 (5.1 channel system). This is my first ever receiver, so I'm quite the newbie when it
comes to surround sound.
Problem:
My hp laptop is outputting hdmi (vid + sound) to the receiver. I had to install different drivers to actually get 5.1
output from the laptop in the first place, but now that's done with. After initial setup, the AVR had all the options for surround and I watched a movie on the 'Multichannel PCM' something setup. I was getting surround sound fine.
However, when I disabled the HDMI output sound on my laptop and my laptop speakers were outputting via the stereo (so I could listen through my headphones), the AVR switched to 2ch, which is fine, since of course stereo is 2ch.
The problem is when I enabled the HDMI output again, when I wanted to watch a 5.1 movie, the stupid AVR is not
switching back to surround. It's stuck on 2ch. No matter what I do, what settings I go to, what buttons on the
remote I press. Nothing. The only option in the H/K surround menu that I can choose is 2ch.
I can't seem to 'confirm' or 'enter' the other options of 'Music, Movie, Videogames, etc.' Only 'Autoselect' brings up 2 channel stereo option, as does the 'Stereo' option itself.
I resolved this last night by switching the HDMI from my laptop into another HDMI port in the AVR. That seemed to work, and the AVR was showing 5.1 for my laptop again.
But once again, when I switched to headphones today, and tried switching back, the AVR is stuck on 2ch.
I'm so mad! I know I can probably do factory reset and not mess with the headphone settings on my laptop again, but just so I can be assured my H/K is not a malfunctioning piece of junk anyone got any ideas what the problem could be?
Cheers for the help!

I think you'd be best served by calling H/K.Political Correctness'.........defined
