Hello all:

I just pick up a pair of ADS L780/2 speakers at the local Goodwill store for $24.99 all drivers look intact and they need to be clean but not major scratches on the cabinets. I will have to wait till I get home tonight to fire them up. and see if they work.
There is a bit of rust around the woofer but no major things other that they are dusty. Any recommendations what to look before I get them connected to the amp.

cheers.

Connect a 9v battery to em and you can test if they work without any music. The 9v battery will make the woofers move so you can check for frozen magnets and whatnot without risk to your amp.

I'd just go for it - but I keep a cache of "test equipment" around - For the record I worry far more about amplifiers damaging loudspeakers than the other way 'round.

A fine deal - they are very good sounding loudspeakers.

I've got a pair of their forebears - L-710 - playing even as I type this.

Well here is a quick update. Got home tested with a 1.5v batter and look good. But I am getting a reading of 4ohm at the terminals instead of 8ohm.
With music one of the woofers sounds blown took a quick look inside and measured all drivers:
    woofer: 4ohm
    mid: 4ohm
    tweeter: 3.5ohm

Next step for the weekend I will take a look at the crossovers and see if the caps are okay. Any tips.

    Cheers

What your meter is telling you is just DC resistance, and therefore won't match the impedance rating of the speaker. So don't let those values bother you. Impedance is a measurement of resistance to current in AC circuits that fluctuates with frequency. So the rating you see on speakers is really just an average over the typical operating range. Hence the reason you will see it occasionally listed as "nominal" impedance.

I never tried the 9v battery test on a built speaker I figured the xover would absorb the voltage before the drivers got anywhere but I will try it , still $25 if if any parts are good you came out ahead !
    ps: dont try a 9v on a tweeter :)

Have you checked the fuses? I think those 780's have 2 per x-over.

    Hey

    @DaveMuell I check but I think the 780 had a fuse but the 780 v2 don?t.

I spoke to the person in Arizona and he said he will recone all drivers and give me a good price plus a discount to do all. Even know the condition of the speakers I like how they sound at lower volumes and how they blend in.
Now a pair of LINN Keilidh with the bases are available locally. It is about the same price of the rebuild. Damm what do I do, have plans to audition them tomorrow. They are in mint condition and I can always do the ADS later........

I am just looking for a Merry Christmas to Me Present...........lol
