Sticky Volume Control on B&K PT3 Pre

I've done some searching and haven;t been able to find any documentation regarding this so I'll ask here in hopes someone might have an answer.

My newly purchased B&K PT3 seems to have a issue with its volume control. It works... but not quite. It wont adjust the volume properly, regardless of how much you spin the knob or how fast. It's a digital volume and works in steps of 2db each. While turning it it seems that it wants to change to the next level but falls back on its current. Sometimes it will change and change back while turning the knob. Sometimes it proceeds to the next step, but so slowly. Turning this knob 20 times shouldn't net you only +4db of volume so I'm wondering if its dirty or faulty. Surprise Surprise... the seller had no knowledge of this issue but regardless, I'm comfortable taking it apart if someone thinks there is something I can check or clean specifically.

For the record, the knob isn't loose. Everything feels solid. Any suggestions??

Thanks...

Well the volume control has stopped functioning all together now and the sleep button on the front doesn't work. Can;t even reset the thing.

This will probably be the last thing I EVER buy on ebay. I'm so frustrated...

Will it work in IR? If I remember correctly that preamp has a remote control.

Sorry your having problems with it , it's a fantastic preamp , it's one of my favorites. B&K is basically out of business unless they are doing repairs in CA.

Remote works fine. However, it's not the principle. I bought this unit labeled in "perfect condition" and it was far from it. I can't even reset it to factory spec because the front 3 buttons you push simultaneously don't work properly. The sleep button has worked all of 3 times in more pushes then what would be "acceptable".

    I'm just frustrated about it.

Edit: I agree that it sounds great paired with the Adcom. Definitely different sound then the previous setup. Hard to tell where most of that influence came from. I'm guessing the amp change.

Sorry to hear this Drenis, your situation is exactly why I would never buy stuff from fleabay. Seems to be the place where most dump their junk lately. Maybe some deox on the volume pot might help some but seems the problem is deeper than that by your description.

I am not sure if this will help you or not but B&K used plug in PCB"S on some of their gear (the 202 AVR for example). These PCB's can loosen up and need to be re-seated. Have you opened this up to see if this is the case ? On a side note, I have one of these pre-amps and noticed that on the new B&K website they have a section where you can download new firmware for various equipment. I haven't done this yet but I'd like to try it. Anyway, good luck with the pre-amp.
