Twinkies, and the Hostess brand passed away yesterday after a long illness brought on by Reduced quality, poor management and labor troubles. As another icon of my youth failed onto the ash-heap of history, I can remember eating twinkles by the box... So long golden goodness. Rest in peace

You should check out Amazon for their Twinkie offering. Not necessarily for a great deal, but for the review comments. Juvenile ? Sophomoric ? Evidence of arrested development ? Sure.

Someone may still snatch up the bigger brands, who knows at this point. I still fail to see the union mentality in all this. If they don't get what they want then screw everyone. From what I understand, the Teamsters union made concessions to keep the doors open but the bakers union said no dice. So thousands now are left without a job, some alternative in this economy. Maybe the union heads didn't get the memo that union dues are last on the list to be paid by unemployed workers.

Yeah, I would expect to see these same items rebranded and sold under someone else sometime shortly after the company goes under.

Or at least thats my hope.....

Wages versus cost of living for Americans whether they are union or not has been on the decline since the seventies.
And now all you hear is give back, give back, give back. After working your **** off the whole life. Now you are supposed to just hand it over to the glutenous pigs called a ceo or similar title and his surrounding boys club???
Statements like above are barf bag material.
Very SAD the brainwashing of America has come to a point where the general populace can't see the trees through the woods.

Was the management of Hostess willing to give back the same as they asked and in the same proportion?

Wages have been on the decline for many years, under various administrations too, thats not news. I'm not laying this solely on the unions feet either, but their lack of doing what needs to be done to preserve jobs is astounding at times. I don't know what management conceeded too as I'm not privey to that info nor are you at this point.

The brainwashing.....yeah, but it's the brainwashing of people who think making it harder for buisness to grow is somehow a payback for some travesty that was bestowed on the working class. Hostess had many problems, nobody is saying different, I'm only commenting on one part of that problem. The bigger picture is more complicated than we can go into around here but one must surely look at what direction we are moving as a nation.

As far as handing it over to the "pigs" as you so called them, I believe Hostess was a privately held company so They can do as they wish. They close their doors, the owners will still be rich and 18,000 will be without work feeding at the government/taxpayer trough. Thats a desireable outcome ? Here's a tidbit of info for ya, wages will continue to go down, workers will still be forced to "give back" for the forseeable future, unemployment will continue to rise and full time work will be dropped for part-timers in many areas. Investment dollars will continue to go overseas to emurging markets leaving the american way of life and middle class lifestyle in shambles. Housing will be flat and new market bubbles will be created waiting for the next burst and bailout. Get used to it, it's what people voted for anyway. Elections have consequences, welcome to the party.

All this talk on raising taxes on the rich was always a game anyway. They for the most part will just pass it on to the end user, the lower and middle classes. So in essense, you just voted to have stuff cost you more out of a diminishing paycheck. Yeah, sounds logical to me. The owners of Hostess won't miss a meal by closing their doors, but 18,000 others just might.....and thats the bottomline in all this.

Consider the suppliers to Hostess as well as the local businesses that depended on them.Suppliers of raw materials, cartons, fuel, food,
it will be many more than 18k affected by this.

The teamster's union in this case recognized the impact on their other businesses and did what should be part of any labor union's mantra, they proposed a role and path for helping the company start towards recovery. The teamster's can utilize some pretty smart business analysts who in this case obviously saw a path to recovery that had some potential for success. The grain miller's union obviously thinks they are elitists and wanted to fight for position that was counter to the economy and the current norms for labor. I guess that was the mountain they wanted to die on. Not sure why people want to blame the management, VC companies, etc. There's never usually a single reason for a company of this size to fail. There's a few tidbits in the bankruptcy documents.

Most likely the brands and the patents/recipies will sell pretty quickly. My guess is that sale will be to a company not encumbered by unions or the aging infrastructure that Hostess brands had.

The one thing you never see is unions wanting to put it all on the line by proving they are smart enough to run a company, which in this case the grain miller's union could buy the company from the bankruptcy and prove how smart they are. Not likely, eh. There's a reason for that. I think the bold experiment in the rescue of Chrysler proved some points.

They went under because most Americans stop buying their products, or bought cheaper local products.
Around here, they sell "Little Debbie".

And why would the other products be cheaper? Maybe because they weren't bogged down with union costs.
One of the "rules" the union had was that they could not deliver Twinkies on the same truck as Wonder Bread.Basically forcing them to have 2 people to do the job of one along with double delivery trucks, fuel ,pay etc.
    Now THAT'S Logistics!

Over the past 19 years as I teacher I can say that the number of students bringing twinkles, ding-dongs, etc. from Hostess has dropped to almost nothing. I realize this is anecdotal but it does show that Hostess was playing with an outdated business model and needed to adapt to current dietary realities.
