I just ordered the following at a price in which i thought was a steal!....

polk deal!.jpg

anyways, right now i'm looking at my rear left/right choices and i think i'm going to go with FXI A6. unfortunately placement will be on the ceiling. i'm thinking of mounting them looking straight down on the edges of my couch. this way, the speakers will be shooting left and right. does this sound logical? also, will the FXI A6 mount on a ceiling okay?

thanks!

I have never heard of anyone mounting FXi's on the ceiling. I don't know if that means it can't be done though, but from my understanding the way the dipole/bipole works is by diffusing the sound around the room, but that is always been with the speakers mounted vertically on the walls. If your rears have to be in the ceiling why not go for some in-ceiling speakers? Like: http://www.polkaudio.com/products/80fxrt

    here was my thought process...

the one reason i don't like the way the drawing sets it up is because there is no wall on the right side for the sound to bounce but there is on the left .... of course, i could also shoot the two speakers forwards and back against the back wall. what do you think?

Again, I am no expert, but that doesn't sound optimal. I would do either in-ceiling speakers or get mounts like BRun suggested.

    thanks for the replies!

forgive my ignorance, but how exactly would the omnimount be used. would i be using to hang vertically, instead of flush to the ceiling (like the diagram i drew)?

You can't mount the Fxi's flush with the ceiling. They have a keyhole on the back towards the top for wall mounting, it works just the same way with the Omnimount. It will still angle down towards the couch, and will sound better that way.

note that on the ceiling you CANT use them as Dipoles. They must be on one line with the couch for that.

Dipole is better than Bipole for me. Dipole > Bipole > monodirectional.

Yes, they do difuse the sound but you still get a sense of direction. If the track intended you to hear something from your left side and instead it came from above.. it's not quite the same.

I use mine as Dipoles, but I still hear clearly where a door closed in movies

so it sounds like the fxia6 won't be a good idea for ceiling. i figured they'd be better than going with standard bookshelfs because they would add some extra dimension. i can't use in ceiling so should i got with fxia6 or standard 6 1/2 bookshelfs for the ceiling? any opinions will be appreciated.... thanks!

ps: also, just got some atrium5's for the patio! excited to hear them!

The Fxi's will work just the same as a bookshelf for mounting off the ceiling, they have the same keyhole mount on the rear. All we're recommending is not trying to attach them flush to the ceiling, they will both work just fine using the Omnimount I linked or another mount.

    Definitely consider the omni-mounts.

I don't usually comment on the cosmetic appearance of a setup, but I'd encourage you to think of how a flush mount is going to look.
