Custom Tiger Maple coffee table

Good Saturday fellow Polkies,

I have had a fascination with tiger/quilted maple for some time now and had a chance to custom a table. The tablet took several months to complete. The process was great aside from having a table designed, choosing the stain and finish was quite challenging. I did not want a thick hard finish like the finish found in bars (to protect the table) but then again, I wanted some form of protection. Using aniline would have really made the tiger strips 'pop' but I ultimately choose a custom stain my builder mixed up. It was really nice to spend a day with the builder and have him mix up many different stain colors, until I found what I wanted. The end result was a stain that resembles the color of a shiny new penny. The second shelf is made with quilted maple veneer (cost reasons), else I would have used solid quilted maple instead. Maybe in the future, when I decide to custom a walnut dining table. Anyhow, I thought I would share with everyone.

The project could be found here:

And here are some pictures of the completed table. Pictures do not do it justice and I lack the artistic photography skills.

Oh!!! That is BEAUTIFUL!!! If you ever get tired of it and want to sell it please put me up high on the list!
I too cherish figured woods. I agree with the aniline dyes they really do make the figure POP...but whatever you put on it sure looks great! Did you put anything else other than stain. I sure like multiple coats of laquer. I have been saving a 1" thick x 14" wide x 12' long curly cherry board to one day do the same.

I spent the day with Pepster's PC hooked to my amp(which JimAckley picked up for me) which is connected by Marvin's IC which is connected to my processor, etc... While listening to Jebhdood CD's and wearing Upstatemax's Oakley's while alternating between Daboyz and Txcoastal1 speakers. There are many great members on this site and I am happy that everyone enjoys the table as I do. Musky1963 and his figured maples takes sole responsibility for this journey and I could not thank him enough for introducing this beautiful species.

The finish included shellack or something like that and topped off with some kind of wax as I wanted more of a matte type finish. I am currently researching what else I could apply to strengthen the table top's protection. Originally I wanted to use tung oil, but to be honest I am no wood-smith and did not want to irritate my builder with hundreds of additional questions. lol... I am all ears for ideas.

There is a set of Usher MD2's that are definitely coming. The seller just does not know that I am buying them yet. hahaha. Once I close on my new house, we will definitely have another get-together here. And talk about audio compression, converters, speakers, amps, tubes, tables and how broke I became from this wonderful Polk family.

To close out this beautiful Saturday night, with the Bama/LSU game on, it is only fitting to have some(or alot) Crown 16 and Boddingtons(credit also given to members here) beer.

There now the sentence is complete.

I spent my day with a paintbrush in hand on a soon to be revealed project, 2 coats on the entire room, 2 coats of to other colors left to go. Time to go take a shower and go to bed.

Take a shot for me and enjoy some tunes

Wax! That is what I use on my walnut desk....If you get a chance Renaissance wax does a really nice job although it does leave a bit of a shine. It will protect against water for a LONG time. It is very nice to have a piece of art to look at every time you sit at that table.

Beautiful patterns and colors in that wood.

But I think it would look even better fitted to my Polk Speakers.

How expensive is that wood? And is it sold by the square foot or the board length?

I also became victim to "Re-veneering" all my speakers and what not, but a reality check was in order.
The wood comes in different grades and thickness also plays a huge part. The one I choose and wanted was an 8/4 thickness or about 2 inches. I did not specify at least 2 inches after all is said and done so it turned out a little thinner. You could buy from different places on the overall piece itself or by the length, it depends on the place. Figured maple does not naturally grow with large diameters like other woods, so it will take several pieces to complete a determined width. Your builder will ultimately determine the price. If you build yourself, you have to search out the local lumber yards, I believe the Northeast is where they originate from. Also look into Bubinga or the likes, but they also come at a premium.

Thanks Scott. I do plan on having this table among other around for a very long time. Something of heirloom type. My next project would be along the lines of getting a tree root and turning it into a table. Something for the back patio, you will find this table of table primarily in asian countries (coffee shops). Speaking of, when you are back in town and have time, we need to have another get together.

If you go to the website, there are many builders that you will find local. There are too much local talent out there that goes un-noticed to the big chains. From suits to dress shirts to fine dining to everything in between that matters, I do not think I will ever do chain again. hehehehe. Supporting local goes insanely far.
