Are you really b!tching about a gasket laying in the bottom of a cabinet? Or just kidding? I would hardly call that poor quality control. Now if you opened that cab and found Jimmy Hoffa's bones. Then I might have to agree with you.

I'll see your gasket and raise you one. When my 1.2s arrived in 1988, I noticed there was zero DA output only on the right speaker. Found one of the series inductors on the XO had vibrated in shipment and the wire came unsoldered on the XO board. Also discovered the speaker input terminal polarity was mis-labeled on both speakers so no working SDA effect for 20 years.

What's 20 years without the SDA worth? Priceless!

I'm surprised you didn't run the suggested tests to determine if the SDA's were working when you bought them in '88, but I guess that might be a bit of hindsight talking. Thats sucks for 20 years. How did you finally figure it out Oldman?

That's not a gasket. It's most likely a piece of dampening material that was glued to the back of the basket of the passive radiator.

I listened to a set of original SRS's in 1987 and ordered my set in 1988. They were drop shipped to my home via truck as 1.2's. I noticed they did not sound as wide as in the store but I had them in small rooms in several homes over the years. I just grew used to the sound and they sounded great for non SDA speakers but in hindsight lacked some of the lower midrange and spatial nuances.

A few years ago I was rewiring for HT, and I set them up accidentally reversing the speaker wire polarity at both speakers and the SDA came alive for the first time. I was blown away. I opened them up and traced the wiring and sure enough, the internal wires to the connection plate did not match the markings or the red/black post on the rear.

Keep in mind in 1988 there was no Internet and no forum. In the '90's the 1.2's and I lived in Saudi, again no Internet there. About the time I discovered the mis-marked terminals I also discovered this forum and someone had recently posted about this problem.

BTW, I wrote Mathew Polk in 1988 about the broken inductor wire on the XO and he was very kind to send a spare SL2000, a one each of the MW's, one PR, and one front grill - for FREE. This was in response to my pending assignment to Arabia where I feared something would get damaged in shipment and customs.

I too had listened to them for a time as I inherited from my girlfriend. I didn't even know about the interconnect cable at first and thought the speakers sounded pretty good as they were. Then I blew 3 of the SDA drivers because I didn't have a common ground amp.(guess I should have read the back of the speakers). I agree this site has been very helpful in trying to put things together, lots of great info.

    Yep that's what it is.
It wasn't stuck on good and fell off.
You could see where only about 20% was stuck down good because of discoloration of the glue.
    A kinda poor man's Dynamat.
And this one must have been assembled on a Friday as one of the four nylon standoffs for the big inductor was not in the circuit board hole but was just bent over.
The 0.3 inductor looks like the wires were touching.
I guess I should have opened them before now (22 yrs) but I had thought that paying that much for them $2750 new that hey they were QA'ed good. The only reason I did open them was to upgrade the Xover. Per OldmanSRS I may reopen and check everything once over now.

When I bought this house new I found a box in the attic for the dining room light fixture so not liking the fixture I was going to use the box to store it, till I opened it ....seems they did not know how to #2 in the bathroom....they like using boxes. So I carried it down to the home builder put it on his desk and showed him, and he said it's hard to get good people these days
