I am shopping caps to replace the old caps in a pair of SDA 2Bs I just got. My SS 2ch stuff definitely leans towards the bright side, (see sig) eventhough the tube buffer has softened up things a bit.

Was wondering if maybe new mylars might be a consideration to keep that smooth controlled sound?

My only experience is with polypropylene (sonicap Gen 1), and I would not characterize them as bright.
They're one of the more popular brands for rebuilding Xovers, Clarity Cap being another. Of course caps are available at all price levels, but as with most things you get what you pay for.

    What's your budget?

I dunno. Probably a hundred bucks or so for the upgrade. Also want to get RDO 194s, so there is another hundred bucks.

if you want to remove that bright sound, your first fix is replacing the stock tweeters. I did that on my 1Cs

Probably a good idea. Will let the caps be for awhile. Opened it up and nothing is leaking

Do the TL upgrade using film/foil caps, Mills and the RD0198-1's........worth every penny.

Yes F1 is right if you are redoing it go for the TL mod it will sound that much better and RDO-198 tweeters are the same price as the 194's

There's a reason the Mylars were all bypassed with small, Silver Mica caps, they're not that good. As others have said, the RDOs are vastly superior to what you have now. If price is factor, Clarity PX or Dayton 1% metalized polypropylenes will do the job nicely, and not break your wallet. You can also get rid of the Silver Mica caps, polypropylenes don't need them.

I can't give you the reason why, they just sound better to my ears.

I replaced the SL2000's in a pair of CRS+'s with the RD0194-1's. It didn't sound right, kind of muted/hollow. I then did the TL mod with the RD0198-1's and that did the trick.

I wonder if the results would vary from speaker model to model example the CRS+ benefit more than say the 1C?

The SDA 1C can't use the RD0198-1, but that's not my point. Polk designed the SL3000 as an improvement over the SL2000, so whatever characteristics it had were applied to the RD0198-1 and improved upon again because the RD0198-1 is definitely better than the SL3000. That's not to say the RD0194-1 is a bad tweeter, it's a definite improvement over the SL2000 and I would strongly suggest replacing it with the RD0194-1.

One would have to hear the RD0194-1 and the RD0198-1 in the same speaker to appreciate the differences. To my knowledge, no one that has performed the TL upgrade to a model that supports that change has ever gone back to the RD0194-1.

I replaced the tweets in my 2.3tls with 198 and 1c with 194 and I was thinking of doing 198 in my 1c after you saying they were better but I see that cannot be done.

I can't be done because electrically they are not compatible. You would have to revamp the crossover totally to get them to work and even then I would think there could be issues sonically.

Since you have 2B's you are a solid candidate for the TL mod. Run don't walk and do the TL mod. Your ears will thank you for it.
