...ok - have condensed 100's of hours of my Godchildren down to 10 dvd's plus more. What is best solution for storage so these videos can make it to the next generationS. Is there a media that can last 50 years or more?

...will a NEW hard drive with the videos....stored in a cool location....make it 50 years?

- life span of a DVD ????

- Cloud Storage Providers . What do they provide that I can't? Do they frequently backup data?

- digital tape?

....my Sony Beta tapes are still active after 30 years.

Back it up to a hard drive and store it or store the DVDs in a safe place. Either should last.

50 years on a hard disk? Possible but in 50 years will there be anything that you will be able to hook it up to. Technology can and does change. Hard drives are just to fragile to store anything on long term, I mean all you got to do is drop that drive and there a good chance your data is gone.

They say anywhere between 30 - 100 years, It really depends on the quality of the disk and how it's stored. This is your best and cheapest bet as you can always copy the data to a better media as they become available. Just make sure to make multiple backups.

Yes they do backup frequently that's kind of the whole point. But then again your data is in the hands of someone else (you have to pay) and who's to say they'll even be around in 50 years plus the fact that you would be putting your family memory in the hands of strangers who would store it across multiple servers that could span multiple states or even country's.

IMO (if it counts for anything) not worth it.

I've had and used all off the media above and had them last a long time and some have gone TU after 6 months, Which ever method you use it all comes down to the quality of the media and how it's handled and stored.

Just remember there is no perfect log term storage media they will all fail at some point this is why you make multiple backups and keep doing so every couple years or even sooner.

And yes it's a vicious circle this is why people don't backup stuff like they should it's a PITA.
