They are available but pricey. Others here could put up a good case to do things differently for the money spent. It would seem there are other options that can get you to pretty much the same place.

Not really, not for the used price. Nothing really comes close. Sure you can find good stuff for less, but it won't compare. Except for the rare deal of a lifetime on a very particular piece.

They don't compare. Adcom FTW, and a big win at that.

Thanks for your input on this H9. I held out for one based mostly on your recommendation. (I also did a bit of outside reading)

With the exception of the sticky volume pot the unit seems to be working flawlessly. Good cleaning took care of the pot and have not had an issue since. Using the "if I knew then what I know now" thought process I would buy it again without reservation.

There was a recent thread discussing upper end pre's (pass labs and someone else I cannot remember at the moment). From what I read there the price to go better than this level on the pre-owned market could easily cost twice the money. H9 could comment on that much better as he posted in the thread.

If someone were looking for one Canuk Audio has one listed for less than I paid for mine. I have no knowledge of this seller but his reviews are good.

In all honesty gygbyt, a Professional Reviewer would tell you I do not know my butt from a hole in the ground and they would be correct. With the newly restored/upgraded GFA-585 I think the sound is sweet. During the rebuild I started to question my choice of amplifier (I could have paid epray prices for a 555 for the same treatment and come out for less) live and learn. I have never second guessed the purchase of the GFP-750

Thanks Devlon but mostly it was being willing to pay what it was going to cost. I looked at your links. As I have said, I cannot speak to overall quality. For some shoppers it boils down to features. The Adcom is not what one would call "feature laden". For the careful shopper the Adcom can be had for a bit less than the price at your link.

Good luck which ever way you decide.

You're probably right! I love my Adcom stuff. XSP-1 just started shipping this week so no way to compare sound quality yet anyway.

Congrats. I had one. Never thought I'd sell it but I heard something better and didn't need the $700 siting in a box in the closet. So I sold it.

Mind sharing what you went to?

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade to the GFP-750.
I agree that there is nothing significantly cheaper that will compete with the Adcom. BUT...

I did own one a few years ago and I really liked it. I bought it so I could replace an Aragon Aurum because the Adcom had a remote. I REALLY wanted the Adcom to work for me. BUT it didn't. The Aurum just had a cleaner, smoother sound. I reluctantly sold the Adcom and kept getting my exercise instead (until I spent a WHOLE LOT MORE) to replace the Aragon. But that is a different story.
My point is that there are preamps out there that can compete with (and beat) the Adcom. System synergy is always a consideration and I'm not saying the search is easy but there are viable alternatives at ALL price points.

I've heard that about the Aragon, but could never find one. They are extremely hard to come by from what I have seen.

I would be interested in hearing the difference but I don't ever want to own a pre without a remote, that would be too annoying for me personally.

Anybody had a chance to compare the GFP-750 to say a GFP-815? I wonder in what ways they sound different?

Another key point is that the 750 has bypass for HT use. This was key for my purchase.

The 565 isn't even on the same planet as the 750.

Does this function only work with Adcom's processor?

Mine went a bit higher than the price you mention. I had bid on several units and got sick of loosing out. When the amp decision had been made final I posted a max bid at my threshold of pain and let it ride. It did not go as high as I was prepared to pay thank goodness but still pricey.

JayCee picked up a couple of Parasounds and Rick allowed as while clean on the outside my amp was a natural disaster on the inside. I was nervous checking mail figuring I had another "something else is wrong" e-mail. At the end of the day a nice 555 would have saved me about $400.00. The process on the 585 was not without pain but I will say I am quite happy with the results.

I have a friend come listen who could have saved me a ton of money. He allowed as how my system did not jam out like it should as I need better speakers. He recommends a pair of Cerwin Vegas with a class D commercial amp like he got out of an old club. Go figure, some people cannot hear the difference and are not interested. Everyone else to listen has been impressed.

There is a little lady next door who loves opera but can no longer attend. She has a few disks of her favorites and loves the system.

    I need a better player.
