Ok. Been a Polk owner for 20 years. Current setup is
Mains rt3000p
Center cs350ls
Rears LS f/x
Sub Velodyne f1200
Yamaha rx-z7
Wife says big towers need to go out of the upstairs living room. They will likely get used downstairs. So....
Headed to the local best buy to look for something wall mountable. Stumbled into a def tech mythos nine and a Sc4000 sub at an unbelievable price, (local BB is closing). I am surprised at how lively and crisp the center is compared to the old Polk. The wife REALY likes it. I see newegg has the mythos 8's on close out. The price point is $450 off of new nines. In the interest of saving some $ how do the 8 & 9's compare?
Sale is done tomorrow so trying to figure this out
Thanks
Jake

I say something else needs to go out of the upstairs living room.Do you hear that buzzing noise? -
No worries. Just means I get to set up a second HT downstairs.

Both models are fantastic. I prefer the newer 9's over the 8's as to me they are smoother and have the racetrack radiators. Using the 9's as L C R is a fantastic upgrade in overall sound quality vs your old polks. They have a cleaner mid range , nicer top end and provide nice smooth bass for a thin on wall model speaker. As you already noticed , as a center channel it's stellar.
I'd suggest using a full Mythos 9 system , get them for surrounds as well , and if you go 7 channel , get another pair. You will be pleasantly shocked on how damn good of a surround system a full Mythos 9 will be. It's awesome.
I run Mythos 10's for a center channel and surrounds in a 5 channel setup. I love it as sound moves around the room , it doesn't change. Their is much to be said by using the same speaker all the way around.
The Mythos 8's are very nice 2. They are an older design but still kick ****. I would not turn down a good deal on some 8's but I would want 5 or 7 of them depending on your room for a complete package.
If you by a Sub4000 I suggest getting 2. One will do but 2 will fill your room with much more even bass. I strongly suggest 2 subs in any room.
Now get out there and get some bad **** speakers. Your wife actually helped you upgrade. Make sure when you mount them , you pay attention to the wall bracket. They come with a template.
Use a good quality CL2 or CL3 rated in wall 14-2 wire. This is all you need to make them sing. Run them in small at 80HZ. They can however be setup at 60hz but I find them to be smoother running at 80hz. Let the sub do all the heavy lifting and you will have one incredible dynamic movie setup.

Also enjoying the benefits of using the same speaker for every channel in my home theater. DefTechs, too -- SM55s. Best the theater has sounded. And in my case I'm able to vertically position my center, which I believe is the preferred method if you can swing it in your room.
Two Channel Setup:
Speakers: Wharfedale Opus 2-3
Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
DAC: Arcam irDac
Source: iMac
Remote Control: iPad Mini
3.2 Home Theater Setup:
Fronts: Klipsch RP-160M
Center: Klipsch RP-160M
Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030
Blu Ray: Sony BDP-S790
TV Source: DirecTV Genie -
I decided against the 8, and went with one more nine....i will be transferring the current nine to a left channel for now. When finances allow I will pick up the third for my center.
Sounds like you are in favor of a nine instead of the GEM xl... Is there that large of a differnce. Surrounds don't really carry as much sound as the fronts, or am I off base?
Besides I want to set up a 7.1 or 7.2 system and It could get expensive in a hurry. I woud be going with front presence speakers not sides as the room just isn't set up for sides.
I must admitt, the def techs are quite a speaker. I always thought the polks sounded nice....and they did, but obviouly there have been a few advances in the last 15 years. I'm sure the new polks would put my old ones to shame as well, but they didn't have as nice of wall mountable solution.
thanks for all of your input.

yes they make that much of a difference to spend the extra money. What are you going to do with the pennies saved other then have a less of a system? Is that really worth it? I think not.
If you want your system to have the ultimate in balance and performance , spend the money and get Mythos 9's all the way around. You will not be sorry you did.
After you build said system , talk to me. Wait to you hear music on a full 9 system like a Multichannel SACD or DVD AUDIO Disc. Damn impressive.Dan
