Today, 8/18/12, The Hunger Games released on Bluray. Yesterday, I ordered it from Amazon. As an Amazon Prime customer I get free delivery. Today, a van pulls into the driveway with my copy of the movie. Not a bad deal for $19.99.

I guess. I expected to get it by Wednesday via the mail. To have somebody hand deliver the day it was released was phenomenal. I guess they are making money with this system. Next month we have to start paying sales tax on Amazon purchases, but even with that I will stay with amazon just for the convenience.

They've set up smaller distribution centers close to areas where they do a lot of business and for common items like DVD's or CD's often have a local delivery firm do the deliveries instead of UPS. In my area, it's now normal as an Amazon Prime member for me to get free next day delivery for popular DVD's or CD's. Out of the ordinary items come from larger distribution centers.

They are still incredibly fast with Amazon Prime shipping if they send larger less common items by UPS though. I think it's still $3.99 per item to upgrade two day shipping to overnight shipping, and $8.99 per item for overnight delivery on Saturday.

I haven't been in Best Buy for years now.

Speaking of which, they are opening a brand-new distribution center just a few miles from my house. Must be doing something right.

Every now and then Amazon uses the Postal Service for two day delivery of CDs that come out of a local distribution center. More often than not for my deliveries these days though it's a guy in his own car or pickup truck zipping around the suburbs making the deliveries.

Amazon and CA made an agreement last year over a law CA passed to collect sales tax from online purchases. At first Amazon resisted, but they later reached an agreement that requires Amazon to start collecting sales tax in September 2012.

Yes, I am one of many who buy online. It will be interesting to see how much the state will get from Amazon. I suspect it will be enough to make the state crackdown on other online vendors.

Maybe **** Riot can come here, after they get out of jail, and do protest song about how terrible it is to have to pay sales tax.

I suspect it will be far less that they think. The budget projections call for 500,000,000.00 anually, but we all know that when they tax something, revenue from it tanks.

The term "state crackdown" sounds so Soviet, doesn't it? I guess that's Kalifornia for you these days. Sometime in the next few months, illegals will be given licenses as well, and I will have to pay for that too with more taxes and higher insurance rates... Thanks Moonbeam Brown.

If you buy something that would have been taxed in-state, you are supposed to declare it and pay Use Tax (same rate as sales tax) on your state tax return. So if you buy something tax-free online and don't pay Use Tax on it, you are technically breaking the law anyway. Charging sales tax on out-of-state purchases simply closes a loophole.

Not only California, we started paying Sales Tax Jul 1 in Texas for Amazon purchases. They reached an agreement with the state, and ended the pissing contests about them and their warehouses here. I don't mind the tax so much. For large purchases, it does make me look at more places. I'll probably keep the Amazon prime, for the streaming. My purchases from there may go down a bit, but I expect they will still get a decent amount of my business.
