They don't need to be in the middle of your room but they sound their best when the "float" in the room meaning have plenty of room to breath. Keeping the tweeters in the right position and correct spacing apart is where they become magical. Screw this up and they sound like crap.

I had a few rooms where they where to big and they didn't sound anywhere near as good as they can and I have some damn nice gear to drive them with. The room crushed them completely. Same room with box speakers sounded much better , they where a nice pair of Revels that I really enjoyed listening to.

You certainly have your salespeak down because you can say things that don't really say anything than the obvious. Your second paragraph is just an absolute given but its by no means the rule or by which you purchase speakers. I've yet to hear an SDA in a perfect room since 2003 and matter of fact, very few loudspeakers EVER. Most rooms are filled with imperfections and that's just fine.

I had Magnepan 3.5R in a room that was smaller than would be suggested but they sounded phenomenal. Could they fill a bigger room and bloom even more? Of course, no kidding....was it a mistake to buy them? Nope as the soundstage was from floor to ceiling and to die for. I also had Tympani IV which are even BIGGER and again, they sounded wonderful. Anyways, my point is that I really know this brand and have never found them difficult to setup in any way. What is true in your statement is that they can collapse if not setup properly. There are absolutely guidelines that are more specific to this type of speaker than monkey coffins but again, this is not rocket science.

You have more knowledge about rooms than I think most ppl do for sure and hopefully some of your previous clients didn't have to kick you out after setting up the room.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I remember visiting a co-workers apartment back in the late 70's - What I thought were room dividers were actually those Tympani speakers. The apartment was not that big, but those speakers vanished into the room. Listened to the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs version of Supertamp - Crime of the Century. Tracked the song School. Vinyl never sounded so good. I would really enjoy a pair of Mangnapan MMG - so would my cats...
