Yes you can use a DAC, not sure about the SB since I never used one.

But why would you need Audio coming from the TV?

You need to hook up the audio from your cable box to your luxman. The TV is just a monitor.

    Boy, now I'm really confused.

The cable box has no audio outs, just a cable out that goes to the tv.

Also, even if it did have an audio out, i'd still have to get audio from our apple tv. It has a digital audio out and a HDMI out.

    Thanks.

Because not everyone listens to TV by way of their HT gear 100% of the time.

Your problem as I see it Stretch, is you have digital devices and an analog only receiver. Time for a new receiver. You could still use the Lux in addition to a new receiver if you like it that much, but your missing out on the new surround formats and the newer audio to boot which is pretty stellar imho.

Ps, Lazareath - LOVE the photos from PAHQ in your photo gallery. Getting him to sign the plates was an awesome idea. Sounds like something I'd be crazy enough to think of. :)

Yep, that is exactly the problem.

But if getting a new tv (which, again, is for us not too much more than a monitor for Netflix and DVDs) means getting a new receiver I'll stick with the tv we have.

Money is definitely an object. Here's where I stand right now -

Don't want 3d. Don't want Internet connectivity, apps, games, or anything to tie my shoes for me. Don't want it to find my friends on Facebook.

Just want a nice big picture and sound through my LSi-15's

I think I'm going for one of these:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat13504&type=page&pageIdentity=searchDriven&useProductString=true&productString=1218551142746*1218551140821&unProductString=1218541224828*1218601586555*1218551143750*1218599350256*1218599351088*1218577514970*1218577565150*1218599348788*1218552486361*1218599350082*1218628183841*1218672941437&catId=

quite frankly, you should just get a JVC projector. Projectors dont really have all the gadgets you dont want and will give you the best picture in my opinion. I mean, why get a tv if you can afford a top of the line projector? its senseless to get a tv when you have the money to buy a REAL SCREEN.

LG is a good brand, but they do have realibility issues. However, Panasonics and last i heard Vizios also got their act together and started putting together quality sets.

    AHA!

Now there's an idea I can run with!

I actually asked the BBuy sales guy today about "just a monitor," ie. no "television" therein. He just gave me a blank look.

If I don't re-emerge from the Googlesphere in 48 hours, please send in a search party.

i would consider panasonic as far as realiability and picture quality. however, i have read somewhere that their best sets had a tendency to start losing their black colors (meaning they started to look washed out) after a while. i believe cnet mentioned this when they had a panasonic as their number 1 tv, but later saw a decrease in black depth.

yep. A tv is nothing but a poor's man projection screen. If people had the space and the money, do you think they would go buy tvs? hell no.... no tv can give you the feeling of a movie theater like an actual projector can.

Found a solution, me thinks -

    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=5279

From the device's manual: "Now you can bridge your legacy sound system with digital sources such as DVD and CD players that don?t have RCA- style analog outputs."

    Found it here:

    http://www.avsforum.com/t/1384268/help-needed-with-appletv-and-dual-zones

    Seems relatively straightforward, yes?

They stated that after "initial burn in" they lost a little black but Panny's black is the blackest there is so there is no degradation in the picture quality. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20014089-1.html

I may look into that, although the box is the one Comcast installed just a few weeks ago, so it is "new." Maybe there are more robust boxes out there.

Those HDMI to RCA converter boxes (linked above) look like a pretty good solution to me.

I was NEVER impressed by LG TV's. I would not recommend them for picture quality and reliability. They are less expensive however, but there is a reason for that. IMO, they don't have the quality (parts) of Panasonic or as someone else suggested, the Toshiba Regza 1080P 120hz LCD.

I suggest either the Panasonic Plasma or the Toshiba Regza 120hz 1080p LCD TV.

I'm a Sony fan and will continue to be one. That being said, the little Insignia we bought for the kitchen is really nice but I wouldn't buy a large one.

I will NEVER buy another Phillips branded TV....EVER.

my Panasonic Plasma was 300.00 cheaper at Sears for the very same TV at BB and BB would not match the price. My cost with 3yr protection was MUCH cheaper than BB. Best Buy wanted 1/2 the price of the TV for the 3yr plan. Consumer Reports even states that a protection plan for panasonic is mostly unneeded as less than 2% of panny's ever need service and when the do 95% are within the panny warranty period
