We have max 35" vertical space and our viewing distance is about 12'.

We're not super duper home theater folks, though we do stream Netflix and watch DVD's much more often than we watch TV.

Just need something reliable and reasonably priced.

Thanks!

Oh... and it will be above the fireplace, so mounted a bit high and we will therefor view the screen at a bit of an angle.

    Thanks.

My vote goes to...LCD or LED! the response time are way better than before, they do not use too much energy and they are very reliable!!!

If your wanting reasonably priced then I would go plasma. A LCD tv will cost a lot more for the same performance. They aslo do not have as good as a picture when veiwed off angle.

Let her buy some of her favorite music to play on those.
Once she hears them with her favorite songs, problem solved.

Very Good. We have the Sony Bravia 553d and before that we tried the Samsung55 3D, (took that one back) and now have the new LG Smart TV 55 3D and it is amazing. Not too hard on the pocket..if you do a little shopping. If we had to keep only one of the 5 sets in the home it would be the LG hands down!!

This is probably what I'll be doing in 6 months to a year. My dad just got the 65" ST50. Awesome screen for the money. I'd probably go 55", and possibly the GT for THX mode.

I have forum members Skrol and GWH to thank for help with both those purchases, both off Craigslist.

I couldn't be happier with the amp and speakers.

The folks on this forum are amazing.

Most of the reviews I've read seem to suggest that plasma still provides the best picture quality of the flatscreen technologies. I'm inclined to agree based on my experience. Take into consideration the weight of a plasma when looking at your mounting options, as they can get heavy.

I'd encourage you to go as big as possible. I'm at a similar viewing distance (~12 ft), and my 50" is just too small. You'll be limited to 65" with plasmas, so that is something to consider. I'd also give a vote to Panasonic, as they have traditionally produced great sets.

If you want something really novel, Vizio makes a "Cinema Display", with a viewing ratio much closer to that seen in the theater. They're the only manufacturer to offer this, but I can see it taking off.

With plasma, don't you have to worry about reflections off the shiny screen? Wouldn't it make a difference how the room is set up and where the windows and outside light comes from?

Thing of the past. They have an anti-glare coating on the screen now.

Just a little side note.....I guess a lot of folks never had a tube TV as they all reflected light like crazy. You dealt with it one way or the other.

ehh... I disagree. My dad's new ST50 has Panny's best anti-glare coating to date, and it's still somewhat of an issue. It is completely dependent on the room. Middle of the day with a big window directly parallel to the TV, there will be glare. Not as much as there used to be on plasmas, but still more than there would be on a modern LCD. Night time, no issues. Bright window on an adjacent wall, no issues. It's really only an issue when there's a real bright light source directly behind the seating area.

for the most part the AR coating better than not having one go look at an LG. Even in a darker room nothing like watching yourself watch TV. Jesse I had many CRT TV's and yes they reflected, but they also had a bit of roundness which did help with reflections. The worst CRT I had was a trinitron great picture but with less roundness had more reflections. and the flat fronted CRTs are up there with the plasma's.
The OP will have it higher up so with a LCD he may be getting into the void so to speak. My Plasma I can lay on the floor and see everything just the same. My LCD forget about it loss of color and other gremlins you get out of the sweet zone....

Money is definitely an object. Here's where I stand right now -

Don't want 3d. Don't want Internet connectivity, apps, games, or anything to tie my shoes for me. Don't want it to find my friends on Facebook.

Just want a nice big picture and sound through my LSi-15's

I think I'm going for one of these:

So you ask for advice, getting overwhelming response for Panny plasma (my choice as well) and then you decide between Samsung and LG.

Can't drop that many Benjamins on a teevee that will get a total weekly use of... oh... 3-4 hours max.

The fact that I'm not buying what most folks here suggested doesn't mean that I don't appreciate everyone's input.

In fact, it was the LG and Samsung recs that got me pointed in the direction I"m now heading. So I chalk up another victory for the power of the forum.

Ok, so we went to Best Buy to look, and now there's this issue -

The luxman that I use as a preamp is analog input only. And every tv in the store, according to the salesman, is digital audio out.

Could I use a DAC to get an analog signal into the luxman ?

Would I be able to run the digital signal through a squeezebox touch and then out?

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks.
