OK, so other than looking like cool toys for tech geeks. Does any of this have a future in higher end audio any time soon? Or is it just special applications like we see in link #1?

#1 possibly could be aimed at a special surface designed to radiate the full audio spectrum or multiple surfaces that are tuned for specific ranges.

#2 Maybe, but keep the fire extinguisher handy. Seriously, I kind of doubt it. All the plasma arcs that I have seen (heard) tend to be noisy. I am not sure how one would get around that. They also tend to fluctuate which seems like it would cause the sound to fluctuate.

After doing more research on #1, it really is just a toy.

The second one could be fun to use as a tweeter if it was moderately efficient.

Plasma speakers are pretty sweet, novel and can sound pretty awesome.

I heard these bad boys at CES this year, in this room!

Cool stuff, cool technology...Didn't have much time to listen, but they played a song with female vocals and a trumpet backing her up...easily the most realistic trumpet I've ever heard short of the real thing.

The July 2012 issue of stereophile on page 64 reviews the Lansche Audio 5.1, which uses a plasma tweeter. I wonder if it has burnt anybody's house down yet.
