    Neil,

What system will this be used in? Be sure and get a nice old Brimar rectifier. I know you already have some 12at7/Ecc81 variants to use.

Be very interested to hear your take on it when proper tubes are used.

Honestly, I'm buying this to see what all the hype is about! Right now I've got the 1C's piped through the Eddie Current and the Krell. Once I move over to the CRS+'s, I'm kind of curious as to how much difference the Krell will make over the modded NAD amp I have. It made a big difference with the 1C's, but I used that NAD with my 2B's and it worked great. So if the NAD sounds as hoped with the CRS+'s, then I may have myself a Krell to sell. In which case, does it really make sense to have a $4000 pre-amp in that mix? Probably not, even though it's also a headphone amp. So I may opt to sell the Eddie Current and use the Dared for 1/10 the price. For now, though, just satisfying curiosity....

If this sounds as good as my system does now, then I will love the thing. FYI, here is the preamp I am using now:

    http://www.eddiecurrent.com/Balancing_Act.html

If I can get a unit at the price of this Dared that sounds just as good, then I'll be a very happy guy.

I'm not sure it will compete with something like that, head to head. The Dared is all about finding the tubes that make you happy. It's very receptive to tube rolling and if you need some advice in that area I can help.

However, just because it won't compete head to head doesn't mean it won't make your system sound great. It may take some trial with some different tubes to find "your" sound you're happy with.

Nice thing about 12AT7 and variants is they are relatively inexpensive compared to the 12AX7 and 6SN7 tubes.

Some of my favorites are the long plate tubes but be aware they can tend to be microphonic and I use tube dampers in a couple of cases.

    Telefunken 5965 are superb
Early Sylvania 5965 (black plates) are superb
Early Mullards ECC81 (especially from the Mitcham plant) are superb
Early Amperex BB's ECC81 (Holland) with the D-foil getter are superb.
1950's Raytheon 6414 Horshoe/black plates are most excellent
Early Valvo Hamburg TK1 production are superb as well.

    Just to name a few.

Yup. Seems like a great piece to play around with. I love the Eddie Current, but it's mainly meant to be a headphone amp. I'm mainly using it as a pre. Most of the time I'm using headphones, I'm in my office with another headphone amp.

So let me explain a bit more about what I'm trying to do here....

I've got this Eddie Current Balancing Act. It's a really serious piece. I spent more for the Alps pot upgrade in the BA than I just spent on this Dared. I love the thing. It's precisely what I wanted - a high-quality balanced tube preamp and a headphone amp. But it's expensive. And I have KR PX-4's for it.....

Add to that my Krell, and it's a very nice system that I put together to power the 1C's. I have this NAD that I never ended up selling:

    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?119095-NYC-area-NAD-2200-amplifier-professionally-serviced-and-modded

I was quite happy with that amp when I had my 2B's. Once I upgraded to 1C's, though, I wanted more power so I bought the Krell and added the Eddie Current.

But now that I'm going back to smaller speakers (the ultra-modded CRS+'s) I think I can be quite happy with the NAD again. And the BA is just too high-end of a preamp to pair with the NAD. No disrespect to the NAD, but it'll pair just fine with a much lower budget pre.

Just food for thought, when I start testing things out I may find that the Krell sounds way better than the NAD with the CRS+'s, in which case I may just leave everything as is and psas this Dared along to someone else.

But if the NAD and Dared does a great job with the CRS+'s compared with the pricier gear, then I could have some very nice gear for sale.

So I guess you can say I'm just auditioning the Dared.

H9, I do recall the NAD having a bit dark of a sound, any suggestions for tubes that'd brighten things up just a little bit?

I'll make an initial offer of $20 for the Balancing Act. Feel free to counter-offer, but just know that I have watched a lot of Pawn Stars and can't afford an amp that nice anyway.

I used the Dared and Krell with CRS+'s for quite a while and thought it was pretty amazing. Mezmerizing given the right source and a a small to medium space. I preferred old Mullards over Telefunkens in that case to warm the Krell up a bit. I'm betting you're gonna love that combo. Congrats!

That would be very impressive. If this thing pairs better with the Krell than the Eddie Current, then this is a hell of a bargain. I guess the first experiment once I get the CRS+'s going is to see how the NAD sounds. If the Krell is killing the NAD I can always swap the Dared around with the Eddie Current and see how it stands up.

Well I dunno about THAT. hehe

One qualifier: the Krell I was using was the older 250a. Dunno how it compares with the newer. I would try to have some tubes heading your way if possible since you will be comparing with glamour gear. I would just repeat the Mullards paired with the Krell, unless yours is not on the bright side as mine was.

As for pairing with the NAD... although I don't think of the Telefunkens as "brightening", they do have wonderful detail and balance with well defined bass, so I would start there. I think the guy in Spain on eBay, Lamberto, might have more of these and can be trusted. The new Pzvane's seem to me to be on the bright side, but I have only a few hours on them and am probably not a good judge on these. They just didn't grab my attention like the ones above (+ Valvo & Sylvania gold).
