I feel like 3d movies are fun as an every-once-in-a-while kinda thing at the theater but wouldn't really consider having it in my home. It just doesn't add enough to the experience to justify the cost of equipment. Adding $2 to a movie ticket is a lot easier to swallow than adding hundreds or possibly thousands to a home setup.

It is nice to see you guys enjoying taking away something that other people like. The whole "I don't like it so no one can have it" attitude is real nice.

Nobody here is taking away anything from you, or anyone else. The market is speaking, and the lack of demand for 3D is taking it away. The fact that 3D TV sales are up is irrelevant since many TVs now support 3D whether the buyer wants it or not. My Bluray player supports 3D, but it is not used for 3D. So, obviously, 3D Bluray player sales is not an accurate guage for 3D demand.

    Really?

"Iwata's view that 3-D is "slightly on the wane" seems like an understatement. You needn't look far for other signs that 3-D is failing. Consider the box office. Although studios released 19 more 3-D movies in 2011 than the year before, 3-D box office revenue fell by 18% in the U.S., or about $400 million, according to the Motion Picture Association of America.

Last month, 3-D attendance hit a record low for the opening weekend of Pixar's "Brave," with just 32% of revenues coming from 3-D, says the Hollywood Reporter. While "The Avengers" fared better, with a little more than half of sales coming from 3-D tickets, it's not even close to the 83% 3-D revenue that "Avatar" enjoyed in December 2009. The days where you absolutely had to see a hit movie in 3-D are over."

"It's easy to guess why 3-D is struggling in movies and television sets: People don't want to be burdened with 3-D glasses, or worry about eye strain, and pay a premium for the privilege."

In the grand scheme of things, 3D won't go away. It's an integral element to recreating reality/our memories, unless we all turn into cyclops.

The current implementation is a thorn to some (eyeglasses, effects to image quality and cost) and more over, the content creators are treating this as a new medium.

May have to wait til the next generation takes over. (Yep, those babies born with iPads in their grasp and the wannabe filmmakers who've seen 3D since they're little.)

3d has come and gone several times before and everytime it comes back, it comes back improved. I think the next generation of 3d (ie: no glasses required) will be when it really takes off.

You really are raising your post count tonight. What is the rush?

3D will take off when a holographic projection is feasible. Something the viewer can walk around to get a different perspective.

Microsoft had some memos on the new xbox that got leaked on the net (court order had them removed). There was a description of something close to what you just mentioned, except it used the kinect 3d motion along with a more advanced 3d effect for the games. So you would get a holographic 3d effect while wearing the glasses and be able to interact with the game using 3d motion. However who knows when the new xbox will ever come out.
