Bad Speaker?

One of mr rear surrounds is making a buzzing noise. I think I remember reading somewhere that if you gently push in the speaker and it makes a crunching noise it's toast. Is that right? It only makes that noise on one side when i push it in.

Sounds like you have a blown voice coil to me if it makes a rubbing or scratching noise when you press in the cone. If the tweeter is still good all you would need is a replacement woofer.

That's what I was afraid of. I mean it still sounds ok just has that occasional buzz at certain frequencies. What would cause that?Sharp Elite 70

That is the nature of voice coil rub. Certain frequencies and levels of sound will make itself known:)

I am gonna get my speaker fixed but I want to avoid doing it again. I have both of the Totem Mask 6.5 in ceiling speakers hooked up to a Parsound HCA 1000a. I use them as my rear surround in a 7.1 configuration. My remaining speakers are run by a Parsound 5250 amp - including 2 more Totem Mask 8" side surrounds which I have no issues with. The HCA 1000 is 100 watts per channel and the 5250 is 250 watts per channel.
Is the 100 watts per channel not enough for the Totem Masks? They are pretty efficient but 6 ohms.
Note: I believe both rear surrounds to be affected.Sharp Elite 70

Unless you play your system at ear splitting volumes I would think that's enough clean power. Surrounds in an HT set up don't carry too much of the load, and that amp should put out more than enough clean power.
Just googled you HCA 1000a and here are the specs. Nice little amp:

I wonder if HT system isn't balanced correctly, I can't see the surrounds getting such a volume to blow a woofer.
