No hard rule on that. Place it wherever it sounds best from your listening position. My humble setup...
...is no more. -
Is this a 2 channel system or a theater?
In general , a subwoofer should live in the front of the room when using only 1. Maybe in a corner , maybe not if that given sub loads and sounds bad. Ideally in the center of the front wall is the general best placement. When gear lives in a closet or out of the room , sub placement options open up as many systems you find the gear directly underneath the Display.
Using 2 subs is actually ideal for most rooms. Better coverage and more even pressure. It's not for more bass , it's for better coverage.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -

For 2-channel music, I have found this to be the best option. Remove the gear from in between the speakers, and place the sub directly in the middle. Directly in front of the sweet spot. For my room, it sounds amazing. -

Agreed, I placed mine against the middle wall and it sounds best there. While it's not the most ideal spot (as I've got nowhere else to place my entertainment stand), it does sound great there, and my room is fairly small.
But the decision is up to you, whatever sounds best, play with the crossovers a bit if you haven't..Current setup: Harman Kardon HKTS 30BQ
Next setup: Polk RTI A7's
Polk CSi A6

I am surprised no one mentioned or suggested you get down on all fours. If you have a long enough sub cable, put your sub in your listening spot. Then in the front of the room, crawl around till you find the spot where the bass sounds best. That is where your sub should go.( if possible)

I had a hard time with halls and oipenings going to kitchens untill I put it in ther cornor with the tv in front of it ( home theatre )
made a HUGE differance really sounded full clean and the woofers range is what its supposed to be .
