Darla, if you go ahead using Audacity and after you get familiar with it, one tip I?d offer to save time and hassle. Record an entire album side at a time and stop/save it. Then do the other side. It also allows me to enjoy the entire side uninterrupted.

In the software, you can open the saved side and look for the silence between the tracks. (You can shrink the track image to fit the screen or expand the track and scroll through it). You can put the cursor anywhere to play a short segment of the track to ensure you are at beginning or end of it. There are time markings above the tracks where I note the beginning and end. I cut the individual tracks out, open new track and paste them in and save them. To me this is much easier than stopping and saving at the end of each track.

Only thing you need to do first before recording is check and set recording level for the most dynamic track of your album so you don't clip them.

I'm just starting to rip vinyl, but I really like Vinyl Studio. In learner mode it pretty much leads you by the hand at every step and will semi-automatically download track info and separate. Break adjustments are usually necessary, but are easy to do - just click and drag. I bought the full blown program that includes click/noise cleanup but haven't decided if/how I will use it yet - still testing. To me, the learning curve is much better than that of Audacity. I just wanted to get my feet wet and this seemed to be the least frustrating method to do that. After enough reps on VS, I'll give Audacity a try to see if there are features included that I would like to use for the duration.

The Bellari VP530 with Telefunken has a very nice sound and I am pleased with the flacs generated so far.

I should add that I have to enter album artist, title, and date. I think I read where one pre/adc/software combo (maybe NAD?) sampled with a needle drop and fetched this automatically, but I'm not sure about that.

Ugh. I missed my VPI 16.5 yesterday so UPS will deliver it today. All is well though because my Anthem came and I played with that all night.

Good on you for getting the VPI. Took me about 3 years to get a RCM. Wish I would have done it sooner. The first record I ran through the Nitty came out looking and sounding unbelievable.

I am getting frustrated. I can't get this thing to sound good lately. Lots of distortion, clicking and popping and that's with a record cleaner, brush etc.

Go to Home Depot or an Auto Parts Store and pick up microfiber rags. When the records are still damp or wet from the cleaning solution, apply pressure when wiping them down to dry them. I find this will get rid of any pops that aren't from a poor pressing.

As for the distortion noise, it sounds like a setup issue.
