Worth anything, I've got a lead on a local one, may be a great secondary player? I've got to see if he has the packaging, but its local and he's willing to let me come over and demo it.

Pretty expensive for its time (MSRP $1200), Burr Brown DACs, Universal Player: see Pioneer press release below. Also, I'm pretty sure a couple of members had this player. If I'm not mistaken cfrizz used it for a while maybe you can ask her, if I'm right?
Mantis (Dan) would also be able to discourse on this!!

Hm. I think I'll grab it and give it a try, if its leaps and bounds above my Oppo in terms of SQ, I may sell the Oppo and go back to PS3 for BD playback, if not, I'll just flip it and give a Polkie a good deal!

There is no Pioneer Elite DV47i . The first of it's kind was the DV47a which I owned on day of release. It was the first Universal player from Pioneer and it was remarkable in it's time. It retailed for $1200.00
The following year pioneer released what I believe is what your looking at in the Dv47AI which suppose to address the Chroma bug. It was slightly redesigned with a slightly new look but internally it was just about the same as the original. This player was also $1200.00 when new and many sold for full retail price.
The Audio quality of this player is excellent. SACD and DVD AUDIO are also very good. It's DVD player back is 2nd to none of it's time and has a very smooth film like quality.
I have no idea what it should cost now , maybe in excellent shape top $200-300. I wouldn't pay anymore for it now as it's value like all electronics are dropped considerably. VS the Oppo for sound quality I'm sure it will hold it's own.Dan

It is the second version then Dan. I picked it up this morning, and got FIVE dvd-a's/sacd's with it. Very cool. He didn't have the box, but I did get the PC and remote with it. Time to go get my teeth pulled, which will enable me plenty of time this weekend to give it a whirl.

Don't know why link above is not working. But it is the press release for the second version Dan mentions! So here is the "text":
[[Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. today introduced two Elite universal DVD players, the DV-47Ai and the DV-45A, that bring the emerging technologies of DVD-Audio and multi-channel SACD to consumers in a single box. The DV-47Ai also raises the bar on audio reproduction with dual i.Link output for high bandwidth connectivity. With more than 1,000 DVD-Audio and SACD titles expected to be released by year-end, Pioneer continues to lead the industry in providing universal players that offer consumers the greatest flexibility to listen to a wide variety of titles in their preferred format.
As with all Pioneer Elite DVD players, consumers are assured the highest quality audio and video reproduction. The DV-47Ai includes 108MHz/12 bit video processing (54MHz/10 bit for DV-45A) and Legato PRO™, Pioneer's refined frequency range expansion technology for better music reproduction. They also offer Pioneer's PureCinema™ progressive scan circuit to faithfully reproduce the original film frames using 2:3 pull-down inverse telecine technology and display them progressively. If the DVD does not indicate telecine conversion, the PureCinema circuit will process the signal with advanced motion detection and create the new progressive image.
Both the DV-47Ai and the DV-45A offer triple Burr Brown 192kHz/24 bit audio processing, six channel analog audio output, bass management, Dolby Digital™, DTS™ and SRS TRU Surround.
"Both DVD-Audio and SACD provide unbelievable multi-channel experience for music and movies, but sometimes consumers can only find the title they want in one format or the other," said Craig McManis, vice president of marketing for home entertainment at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. "We're giving them the freedom to buy one DVD player and be able to play discs from either of the two emerging formats. We were the first company to offer a universal player and now we're bringing even greater technology to the table with the i.Link connectivity."
The i.Link technology is an industry standardized format, allowing for greater compatibility with other four-pin IEEE 1394 input connections. The DV-47Ai is a great product on its own because of playback capabilities, high-video resolution output, and utilization of i.Link for high-bandwidth audio connectivity. It can be further enhanced this fall when combined with Pioneer's VSX-49TXi, with its dual i.Link inputs that will enable the DV-47Ai to be used to its fullest potential.
The Pioneer Elite DV-47Ai also offers the following outstanding video features: * Super-Fine Focus Filter with 4:4:4 video up-sampling
Sixteen video parameter adjustments including Progressive Motion, PureCinema (on, off, auto), YNR, CNR, Mosquito NR, Block NR, Sharpness High, Sharpness Mid, Detail, White Level, Black Level, Gamma, Black Setup, Hue, Chroma Level and Chroma Delay. Once the desired adjustments have been made, they can be saved in one of three available user memory settings.
Three factory video settings (CRT/PDP/Professional)
Trick play processor (smooth scan)
Upgraded graphic user interface for easy set-up navigation
The DV-47Ai and DV-45A will be available in fall of 2002 at a suggested retail price of $1200 and $700 respectively.

Back home! Didn't feel a thing, but I suppose the numbing will wear out soon... The player is mint, I got with it as well Emerson lake and Palmer brain surgery on DVD a, Metallica on DVD a, Mariah Carey #1's on sacd, top gun soundtrack on sacd, and some immersion sacd....
Well time to relax a bit, maybe take a nap... -
Congrads on a very fine player. I loved mine every day I owned it. I would still have it if I didn't find a Universal Blu ray player in my Cambridge Audio.
I wish Pioneer would release a player of this caliber again . I thought the DV53FD would have been that player but I was greatly mistaken after owning one for a full weekend and then failure.Dan

Initial impressions....
So, very initial, I've only spun a few tracks through this player so far. All two channel, but I'm fairly impressed. I'd say it sounds quite a bit less "mechanical" then the Oppo. Great imaging. It adds a bit more sparkle then the Oppo, which with the 9's is a good thing IMHO. One of my favorite reference tracks as of late is about the last 50 seconds of My Good Gal from Old Crow's Big Iron World. I suggest you check that section out, lots going on behind a blaring harmonica. Matches well with the 9's.
I'll admit, I planted it on top of the Oppo, so not the greatest place for it. I'm running it with one of Paul's xlo power cords, and some emo ic's. Btw, I need two pair of some exp1 ICs if anyone has extras, or at least one single.
Anyway, I'm in the mood to jam, so back to the music.
P.s.,
Tomorrow I'll get to find out how this stacks up against a squeezebox, interested to see how that goes. -
I know I love mine. If you get a few SACD's to run through it you will be amazed. Paired mine with a VSX-56TXi and it is just wonderful.
