Making a go at it....

ALRIGHT!
I'm making a go at quitting smoking. I've opted for the Wal-Mart brand Equate patches. I feel like I'm committed to it. As a lot of you may know, I try and stay fairly active. Walking the dogs, canoing, biking and hiking. I want to be able to do more, and feel good throughout it. Today is day one, and I feel like I'm doing O.K.
With the patch I have the mindset that hopefully the cravings won't be that bad, but I'm worried about going home where I usually sit on the screened in poarch and work, as well as my first week or so waking up. (I loved letting the dogs out and having a cig with my coffee) I think those will be a tough times. This is going to be one of hopefully a few major changes in my life, besides being pretty much single at this point for the first time in four years.
But I'm setting myself up for success, I won't be able to smoke for a week after Thursday, I'm getting my wisdom teeth knocked out. Hope that'll help me. I've set a date to reward myself two months from now as well, with a pre that has HT bypass if all goes well, the biggest reward is coming from my mother. She'll need a non-smoker bag boy for her trip to Europe, maybe this fall, and that will hopefully be me. I'd love to return to Europe for a few weeks.
Any advice from ex-smokers? I'm going to give it my all.

Distract yourself every time you get a craving. Be active, and remind yourself of all the benefits of quitting when you get those cravings. I did it, smoked for 20 years, thought it would never happen, but here I am at the 3+ years without one puff.
The more active you are (mind and body) the less time you spend thinking about it.
YOU CAN DO IT! I did!
Best of luck!

I don't see how that works. Don't you just end up with two smoking holes in the head?
Hey, D! Speaking of smoking, you know Hwy 24, that you drove up between Garden of the Gods and my office? Right now that is closed due to the Waldo Canyon fire! The fire is actually threatening GOG and the whole west side of Colorado Springs, as well as Manitou Springs, so keep your fingers crossed. http://inciweb.org/incident/2929/

Get a pack of Nicorrete lozenges too for the big cravings. They're expensive but they got me to quit. Good luck !!! Wow, a quick calculation say's it's $2,190.00 per year at $6.00 a pack to be a smoker nowadays (if you only smoke 1 pack a day) ! That's gonna be a really nice amount of $$ to put into new gear & music, instead of dark goop into your lungs !! Life insurance rates drop way down also.

Will power.
First two weeks will be the worst. You will quickly dislike the smell/taste of smokes when around people too. Try not to think about it. -

AWESOME!! This is THE #1 BEST THING anyone can do for themselves, healthwise. It's a tough road though, nicotine has been shown in several studies to be equal to or more addicting than heroine.
Good luck to you...the further you get from that last puff, the easier it gets. BE STRONG! :biggrin: -
Good Luck! Hope everything goes well. I had two cousins who didn't make this decision and well...let's not go there!

Thanks for the support guys! It can be tough for me at times because I work out of a car, so I'm in it 8-10 hours a day. STILL going strong today, and I'm almost ready to take that ride home!

Copious amounts of liquor and sex and/or self-pleasuring have helped others cope with their withdrawal. I kept testing my lungs with vigorous bike riding, it was amazing to say the least !

$5/day (1 pack a day)
30 day month = $150/month
12 months = $1800/year
$1800 would buy a VERY nice amp!
Unfortunately I am a 1/2 a pack/day smoker.
But, I don't think it will be long and I will be right there with ya Cody!
Best of luck, and if I might suggest a good amp with your savings: McCormack DNA 225!Testing

I wish you luck. I wish the missus could break the habit, the willpower just isn't there. I quit 20 years ago and don't miss it a bit. The wife on the other hand doesn'nt even include the thought of quiting in the New years resolution. I guess ol RJ Renyolds still gets a portion of our income. I wish she would quit but it looks bleak. Once again good luck kicking the habit. I bet that $1800 annually will be worth it.Home Theater

Whew, day two! I haven't put the patch on yet this morning, but I'm about too. The hardest thing was first thing this morning. I won't lie to myself or you guys, I had about three puffs last night on the deck, but I put it down. None this morning, and I'm hoping to go the whole day.
Paul, your crazy! The extra $ on a monthly basis will be well worth it, plus I really like the idea of a pre with HT bypass. Hopefully the extra lung capicity and cash will keep me motivated, I really want to pull through this!
More tomorrow morning... -
Keep up the fight man.
I need to stop as well (cigars) and hope to do so soon.

Cody: Here's a thought...
If your a 1 pack or more a day smoker: take the cost of the pack and put it into a seperate bank account each time you would be normally spending cash on a new pack.
The money in the bank should be some decent motivation to continue to stop as you can see the effects in a measureable way, plus will help you upgrade quicker"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Wednesday update! I can't tell you guys how much help this thread has been, and I had no idea it would be when I posted it. Yesterday was the first time in I don't know how many years I didn't have a single puff, drag, anything. I kept busy though, got home from work and hopped on the bike to a buddies house to help him pick in his garden. I can say that there were times I wanted one, but just popped in a piece of gum and tried to forget about it. Thanks again.

Excellent!!! Hang in there, you can do this!
Thanks! I'm having a few beers with a buddy tonight and grilled some steaks, but haven't had a puff yet! It's tough, but I'm working at it. -
Be careful with the brews ! Beers can weaken one's resolve, in my experience. I used to transform from a moderate smoker to a virtual chain smoker when I was drinking in a bar setting ! Hated myself bigtime the next day !!
