Lets say it is now 9:00 pm. Do I set my clock to 10:00 or 8:00 to make it right tomorrow???

I don't know that it's the official reason, but I think that the reason that it's not something that is changed until 2am is because of the alcohol thing. Last call doesn't get extended on those nights........

    Public Service Announcement:

Easy way to remember the time changes for Daylight Savings Time:

    Spring forward, Fall back.

Meaning, in the Spring we push the clocks forward an hour and in the Fall, we push the clocks backwards and hour. We are currently in Standard Time. Next Spring, when we push the clocks forward, we will be in Daylight Savings Time.

that depends on what time last call is where you live... here in TX it does get extended because last call is at 2am so you do get an extra hour of drinking :)

It actually depends on what bar you are at. I know of a few bars with last call at midnight and still others with last call at 2 am and still others with last call at 3 or 4 am and I even know of one with a last call at 7 am.

I think all the reasons everyone gives is a bunch of bunk. Nobody seems to know the real reason 100%. I've heard that it has something to do with the calendar. I've also heard everything from train schedules to farmers to school kids to bars and even banks being the reason yet none of it ever pans out.

the real reason is for the farming community to be able to get the maximum use of the short daylight during the winter.. and the most use of the long days in the summer. end of story.

See, this is me giving an answer nobody likes but, that answer that you gave danger boy, it's like every other explination in this thread. Just because you said it is...end of story, does not make it so unless you furnish proof to back it up.

I know of a site where I have a pretty darn good chance of finding the correct answer but it is down right now so I can't get to it. If I find the answer, I will post it here for everyone. You may be correct, I just want to know, 100% without a doubt, if that is the correct answer.

It saves energy. When we're awake, we're more likely to have our TVs, VCRs, and lights on (among other home appliances). By shifting the hours we're likely to be awake to correspond with the daylight outside, we're less likely to have the lights on, so we use less electricity.

It saves lives. When people's waking hours correspond with daylight hours, they're safer. Traffic accidents, for example, are less likely when it's light out.

It cuts down on crime. Crime tends to happen after dark. As is the case with accidents, people are less likely to fall victim to crime when their waking hours are synched up with the sun.

So, following that theory......how is it safer when it's DARK at 5-5:30pm, everybody is tired, in a hurry to get home and rush hour is in full swing???

Again, it's dark when most folks are getting off of work, so as they walk to their car in the dark they make a perfect target for a criminal act.

    DST has outlived it's usefulness.

I think you have this backwards... the time we're in NOW, when its dark at 5:30... this is Standard time, not Daylight-saving time. Daylight-saving time was between April and October.

I'd always heard the reason as .. to give people more lighted time during the summer when the weather is nice. The sun goes down when the sun goes down.. but when we "spring forward" then the sun, based on the *clock*, goes down an hour later, so we get sunlight on summer nights until 8-9pm instead of 7-8 pm. So we have 3-4 hours of light after work rather than 2-3.

When the change was made last week, we quit DST and returned to Standard. It would still be getting dark at 5:30... it just wouldn't be the apparent change it seems like. You would have, in fact, had sunset an hour earlier all summer and less 'daylight' after work in which to go out into and run and skip and play.

burdette is correct...we have just left Daylight Savings Time and returned to Standard Time. Without DST it would get dark around 8:00 PM during the summer rather than 9:00 PM. Instead of getting rid of DST I would rather have it all year round. I too have heard one of the reasons for going back to ST is for the safety of kids in the mornings so that sunrise occurs before they go to school.

    Shack,

    Right, that's what I meant!

Kids have really good eyes, so they can see in the dark better than me.
