Relocating to Kansas City

April 27th I was contacted to see if I was interested in a job that required relocating. We have been in Plano for 27 years, was not particularly happy in my current job but not enough to do anything about it.

After 5 weeks of interviews, background check and drug test I have a start date.

I have to be in Overland Park June 25th to start my new job. 2 weeks later I will head to India for a month.

This is really exciting for us and a huge change. One thing I am really excited about is a house with a basement. I have never experienced living in a house with a basement.

Anyway, big news for us and thought I would share. Hope to meet some local polkies once we get settled.

In all seriousness congratulations and I hope it will be a great choice for you (and family) both personally and professionally. I don't envy you the travel part of the gig - but you might see that as a perk! I hope you get to go - at least - business class!

Congratulations! Traveling abroad is also a very exciting and eye-opening experience. I've spent almost 5 years of my life outside the U.S. It gives you a much "needed" perspective, one that is a lot less parochial in nature!

As for basements. I would NEVER live in a house that didn't have one. And mine doesn't look that different than Mark's, above. Though I'm sure he has "more" down there than I do.

    Enjoy!

Thanks all. I have been to France about a dozen times, Argentina and looking forward to India.

If I had a basement in my current house it would like like the pic above but since this is a fresh start I am hoping it will take awhile to get like that. My attic is a different matter.

KC seems like a slower pace town than Dallas. ANy change is good.

We are keeping our home in Plano for now. We have a year to take advantage of the relo perks so we are in no hurry.

In todays job market I feel lucky to be approached and how well I am being treated. I know it is tough out there for a lot of people and certainly feel humble.

    Congrats Tracy,

I think you will enjoy the KC area. Plenty to do and all the folks I have met are real decent. I'll shoot you a PM the next time I'm working in the area and maybe we can get together for a beer or dinner.

What a big change for you after 26 years in Plano. Sounds like a great opportunity. DFW is losing a heck of a great guy.

Also, congrats to the local KC Polkies who will be able to buy your awesome equipment when you decide to upgrade:mrgreen:

Welcome to the Kansas City area! I'll echo what others have said that I think you'll really enjoy the Johnson county area. Plenty of fun stuff to do within a reasonable driving distance, and the people here are quite friendly. Great BBQ is just icing on the cake. :)

Best of luck with the move and the new job.

Yeah, you'll have to tell us about the comparisons between Texas BBQ and KC BBQ. Although, I have never been to Plano so I am not familair with the BBQ there.

It will be a good opportunity to rearrange your gear as well which sometimes can be a good thing. I wish you and your family well with the move and your new job. Let us know how things go. And post some pictures of the new hour and rig setup.

Yeah, I second that opinion. I've been there for about 6 months and I enjoyed the place. You'll meet some really interesting people over there. Although I din't enjoy driving there, I don't know why. Maybe it's because I enjoyed a lot driving at my city, it may have been affected mentally. Anyways, congrats for your new destination. I visited Kansas City during an academic conference and promised myself I would eventually move there. Absolutely fell in love with what I saw of the city. Just a really unique vibe. And lots of really cool fountains, of course....
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
