Well I have been to hundreds of concerts over the years. I have seen some amazing shows and some not so amazing. Thought I would start a thread to discuss concerts etc.

Here goes-

This year I have been to a few disappointing shows (Karl Denson, The Black Keys) but last night my my faith was restored in live music.

I went and saw Steve Kimock and friends at The Baltimore Soundstage. There were only about a two hundred people total. Small and intimate crowd. Wellhe put on quite a show. He played some of the best guitar I have seen in a while. He did this with a little help from his friends, notably Bernie Worrell on keyboards http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Worrell
Wally Ingram on Drums. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wally_Ingram
Andy Hess on Bass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Hess

Great show! Check it out if you get a chance. http://www.kimock.com/

We are lucky enough to have a smallish outdoor pavilion close to us. Have seen some pretty big names and shows there. Sheryl Crow, George Thurogood, John Fogerty. There are also 5 dollar Fridays where less known bands like the "Waitresses" show up. Great time and the weather has always been great.

What a good line up. Kimock is vastly under rated as a guitarist, IMHO.

Up (sort of) in my neck o' the woods, another very cool venue that hosts some amazing guests - given its seriously off-the-beaten path location - is the Stone Mountain Arts Center (SMAC) in Maine http://www.stonemountainartscenter.com/ArtsCenter/

Every once in awhile I have been known to see music in Virginia. I have never been to The Birchmere but it has been on the radar for quite some time. I like Wolf Trap (even after getting busted there for smoking pot (15yrs ago)), dislike Nissan Pavillion, and had so many great times at Hampton Coliseum.

Ouch ! Yeah, I think I'd dislike a place that now calls itself "Jiffy Lube Live" ! (Nissan P.) MerriwetherPost Pavillion wasn't too bad years ago, haven't been there in a LONG time. Used to eat at Rusty Scupper in Columbia before the show, that was a nice nite out,IMO !

Lived in Denver for 35 years, best places were Ebbets Field, Red Rocks and the Rainbow Music Hall. At Ebbets Field, which probably held less then 500 people, I saw..Atlanta Rhythm Section. Tommy Bolin, Steeleye Span, Sutherland Brothers and Tim Weisberg. At Red Rocks, it was the Cheap Trick opening for the Kinks(!) and Metallica in support of their And Justice for all album. The Rainbow gave me..The Pretenders, Payola's, Greg Kihn Band and most famously, the first American tour by the Police! Still have the giveaway police whistle from A&M from the show:mrgreen: Great stuff, great memories!

"Small and intimate crowds in smaller venues" are what artists like Steve Kimock deserve.
Might throw appreciative and MANNERED, too; know when to shut up and LISTEN.

This offering, a "stream of consciousness" ode to the people of Japan wouldn't work in some 50,000 seat stadium, IMO.

My personal favorite was Alicia Keys at the Verizon Wireless Theater when she was first coming onto the scene. It is a smaller venue, so it was much more intimate than your typical stadium experience. Alicia truly is an incredible talent, and she put on an amazing show. I especially liked how it was just her and her piano during the early part of the show.

Rainbow Music Hall was an awesome place to see bands play!! God I miss that place, it's a Walgreens now but they still have the Rainbow marque up that Walgreens uses..

And Red Rocks is one of the best places on the planet to see a show, And it only takes me 5 minutes to get there from my house..

Went and saw "Furthur" at Merriweather Post on Sunday. I just love Merriweather. Furthur was fun. I have a hard time thinking of them as anything other than a very good "Dead" cover band though.

I prefer the smaller shows here in Louisville, KY. Some of the best concert-going experiences I have had have been in clubs and bars. Not much of a fan of the really big concerts that draw lots of people. Been to a few and they just feel kind of stale and impersonal. Probably the biggest name I've seen recently was Devin Townsend at Phoenix Hill Tavern. Really great show, and got to chat with Devin afterwards. Would have gone to see Puscifer when they were at the Brown but couldn't get tickets in time.

Tell ya, I've pretty much given up on Rock concerts. Most the time they play venues where the acoustics suck anyway. Give me a small jazz club, filled with the smell of bourbon and smoke and I'm 3 feet away from the sax. Now thats how us old farts enjoy our music.:smile:

Went to Linganore Winery Reggae Wine Fest yesterday http://www.linganorewines.com/eventspage_july.html#july2007

    A few things of interest.
    1) $20 gets you in and a wine glass. Free unlimited samples!
    2) Great venue (basically a stage at the bottom of a hill on a farm), about 2,000 people (I was surprised that many people were there ) (Not surprised anymore now that I am in on the secret)
    3) Bands were great. Strykers Posse are an old fave of mine. The Image Band is a new fave especially if you are not afraid to dance.

Another one of these fests are planned for October http://www.linganorewines.com/eventspage_october.html#october2007
I highly recommend if you are in the area.
