Sub doesn't sound right

So I have a psw110 sub hooked up to my Yamaha rx-v371 receiver and while playing music, first it isn't very loud, and second, the sub wants to produce a gurgling noise and plays a lot of the bass notes sharp. I have a RCA R/L male to male cable and I have one right hooked up the the subwoofer output on the receiver and the other right hooked up to the "right/lfe" in on the sub.

First, let me say that I haven't been able to look at my receiver settings and see if the front speakers (Monitor 40's) are set to "small" by default like it says in the manual and if the "yes/no" for having a subwoofer present is set to yes by default also; nor have I been able to set the crossover point. My puppy went on a rampage one day and destroyed my remote before I could change any settings so one is being shipped as we speak.

Also, I know this subwoofer has a lower limit around 38hz. It sounds pretty good, when you can hear it, with classical music which is what constitutes most of what I listen too. But I also listen to dubstep and when I'm listening to some of the songs (I have my ipod hooked up the the receiver), the bass coming out of the sub (again, if sound is coming out), sounds great half of the time, then the other half, I hear a slight gurgling and the notes seem to be sharp, or a few whole steps off. Granted, the frequencies in dubstep get pretty low, but they surely aren't getting that low for the sub to completely miss its mark?

I play numerous instruments and after training my ear, I have near perfect pitch and sometimes can't handle it. So, even though on a budget, if I want to listen to dubstep, do I need a sub with a lower limit? Around 30hz? Is this even the subs problem, or should I try and get a sub rca cable and see if setting need to be tweaked in the receiver first? Money isn't a problem, and I'll be graduating in a few weeks and I'll have more to spend, but I'm a very frugal person so I tend to save most of my money. But would it be worth it to go ahead and buy the DSWPRO440wi and sell the one I currently have?

Firstly, turn the volume for the sub to 50%. Secondly, run the YPAO sound calibration on the Yamaha. That should set your sub output correctly. It worked for me with my Yamaha.

I have the same problem with my Polk Audio DSW Pro 550wi. I have the Yamaha RX-v471 AVR. I ran the YPOA, but I notice the bass sounds like it is off mark and slow instead of fast and tight. I am not sure what to set the crossover to on the back of the sub, so that may be a problem. Also, when I ran YPOA it set my other speakers to large and turned the sub level to -16 which was way too low of a setting once I set the subs volume to %50. I think the biggest part of my problem is the main listening position is in a bit of the bass null, but I should still hear some bass throughout the rest of the room.

Back of sub: Low Pass-120. Use as LFE-yes

On sub remote- hit reset and confirm sub volume is at 20 by watching the blue LED. Set Phase at "0"

In Yamaha menus- set the sub crossover to 80

run YPAO again- put the mic where you mostly listen. Make sure there is no noise in the room...

then manually go back in the Yamaha menu and set all your speakers to small after YPAO is run.

I will def give that a try. I did a quick check and the Low-pass was a little off and on the receiver YPOA set the sub crossover to 60hz. I already noticed some low end frequency improvement. I did not get a chance to run YPOA again after making the changes due to the fact that the house was not quiet what with my kids running around. I will have to tell the kidos to go play outside this weekend and run YPOA again.

Don't forget to set the sub volume to 20 (50%) prior to YPAO. And switch all speakers to small after YPAO.

Maybe that was my problem to begin with. I thought I read in the AVR manual to set the volume on the sub to 100% for the YPOA test and then back down to 50% once YPOA is complete. I suppose it makes more sense to set the volume of the sub at the volume it will be ran at during normal operations during testing. That would make the test more accurate. Might also explain why it set the levels so low after the first test.

If you set the volume at 20, you can still adjust after YPAO to your liking. But I think you will see/hear the bass will be much louder if you calibrate at 50% since it will not detect as much bass signal during the test.

I'm just sharing the love. I learned alot here when I started out too.

Hey I appreciate it and will take all the love I can get...lol JK. I am a newbi and just trying my best to get up to speed. This is my first non HTIB which is a challenge, but loving it!
