per the quotes from F1nut and brgman, he was a gifted driver and only retired from that due to heart problems. He raced against my father in the late 50's in SCCA competition, driving a Ferrari something. My dad drove an AC Bristol aka the ACE (popular among privateers at the time), the body of which became the basis of the Cobra. Shelby dumped the anemic engine, which he stated was designed for taxis, and put in Ford's then new 260 CID. Only a few of these were built before the 289 came out and he began installing those.
When he finished building the first Cobra he was trying to get car mags to do road tests. In order to make it look like his outfit was a real factory buildng lots of cars, he repainted the one finished one he had several times.
Per this month's Car & Driver (I think that's the mag) with the 1000 hp Mustang on the front, he's quoted as saying the 289 Cobra was his favorite, even over the 427."Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer -
I'm guessing he never wore skinny jeans!!/QUOTE]
And you can bet your **** he never asked publicly for advice on sport sandals. -
Makes you wonder what would have happened if the chicken farm hadn't failed.Vinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
the tiger is a cool car too...shelby had some involvement with that...started with a 260 v8 then the 289...a much more attainable cobra, per se
