RIP to a true American Automobile Legend. I bet in the next 6 months Shelby badged cars will bring record numbers. Wish I had one-lol

I wish I had one to SELL and take advantage of what will be a frenzy of sorts in the next 6 months or so.

The man was a legend in the world of racing and automobiles...and his status was well deserved. His Carroll Shelby Foundation and Childrens Foundation were as legendary as his cars. He raised a lots of money for for lots of sick children and heart transplant research.

I wish I had a Shelby Mustang...not to sell...but to own a piece of automotive history.

I will never forget when I bought my first Mustang in 1969, there was an Acapulco Blue GT 500 sitting in the showroom. The dealership GM was a cousin of my dad. I talked him into letting me sit in the car and start it up. As it fired up I thought the glass windows of the showroom were going to shatter. It is something I will never forget. I tried to talk my dad into loaning me the money to get the GT 500 instead of the blue coupe I ended up with...DIDN'T happen.

RIP Mr. Shelby. You will be missed.

    RIP great engineer.

He wasn't an engineer. No degree, no schooling at all and no license.

He was a chicken farmer and an amateur racer. Got a ride in F1 for with Maserati in '58 and then with Aston Martin in '59. Then retired because in 20 races he had 0 wins and 0 points and his best finish was 4th at the '58 Italian gran Prix but he was awarded no points because it was a shared drive. On his own, the best he could muster was 8th place in the Portuguese Gran Prix in '59. They say it was due to health reasons but I think it's more a combination of crappy cars and he just wasn't that great when stacked up against the rest of the world drivers.

He's called a "designer" too but he had no credentials for that either. No degree, no schooling, no license. He just did what every other car nut in America was doing at the time, found the smallest chassis he could and stuffed the biggest engine he could find it in. He just happened to pester the living hell out of Lee Iaccoca until he gave him engines and a boat load of money for the Cobras in 1962. But Shelby American didn't exist so somebody had to build these factory cars for Shelby. Shelby wasn't even a crew chief, he just ran the team, like a Newman-Haas or Roger Penske kinda deal. IIRC, Holman-Moody did the final assembly and set up of all the cars that the racing teams Shelby managed used. Hell, Holman-Moody did everything in the 50's, 60's and 70's for Ford's racing teams from drag racing to the GT40's. Shelby American didn't even exist until 1964.

No, Shelby wasn't an engineer. He wasn't really a designer either. Just a guy with some ideas who knew how to procure the resources to make the ideas a reality. And actually, all of these cars with the Shelby name on them? The vast majority of them were not designed or built by Shelby or Shelby American. They were either a consultant or just a license of the name Shelby. The only thing Shelby actually built was the street version of the AC Cobras that regular joe's could buy. All the Shelby Mustangs were produced by Ford in Ford factories. You could buy yourself a Mustang and ship it to Shelby American later and they would gladly do the conversion for you but all the VIN's on the Shelby Mustangs are Ford VIN's, not Shelby American VIN's. And Shelby American is a listed manufacturer. They have issued VIN's but never on a Mustang. That's why Shelby Mustangs have serial numbers for the pedigree.

Shelby first made his name behind the wheel of a car, winning France's grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race with teammate Ray Salvadori in 1959. He already was suffering serious heart problems and ran the race "with nitroglycerin pills under his tongue," Messer once noted.

He had turned to the race-car circuit in the 1950s after his chicken ranch failed. He won dozens of races in various classes throughout the 1950s and was twice named Sports Illustrated's Driver of the Year.

That was all prior to F1 and all amateur. He wasn't professional until F1 where he was outclassed. Except for the 24 Hours but he was part of a team, not the only driver.

On top of that, up until he entered F1, he was winning in the amateur ranks regularly. In fact, he got the F1 ride from driving for Ferrari in the Mount Washington Hill Climb. Ferrari wanted him to drive F1 for them but he already had deals with John Wyer for sports cars and Maserati for F1. John Wyer was the guy who had the deal with Gulf for the legendary blue and orange livery from the Ford GT40. Wyer struck a deal with Shelby for sports car racing on his team and Shelby went and raced F1 for Maserati. He turned down Ferrari because he said he had bills to pay and the "honor of driving for Ferrari" wasn't going to pay them and he already signed the deals with Wyer and Maserati.
"Old Man Ferrari offered me a job and I said, ?Well, Mr. Ferrari, I have a family, three children, what kinda money?' He says, ?Oh, it's an honor to drive for Ferrari.' And I said, ?Well, I'm sorry, I can't afford the honor.' And I had a deal with John Wyer, anyway, and I had another deal with Maserati. I had a choice of four or five different offers. So I turned Ferrari down."

More info on Wyer, he ran the GT40 team with dismal results in '64 and '65. Ford took the team away from Wyer and put it in the hands of Shelby to manage and Holman-Moody to prepare the cars. Wyer kept campaigning the MkI's and experimenting with them as well as his Lola based Mirage cars. But he never saw the success with them that the Shelby team with the Holman-Moody cars did. In 1969 though, when rule changes made the GT40 obsolete, Wyer moved on to the Porsche 917 and saw great success. So much so that he was running the Porsche factory team by 1970.

Yeah, Shelby had health issues but if he was winning in F1, I doubt he would have retired when he did. He'd have found a way to keep driving. I'm not trying to bag on the guy, my views of him are just firmly cemented in reality and not this aura and mystique that popular culture and his incredible mind for marketing formed. As a driver, he was average at best. As a team manager and a business man, few can toe the same line as him. He deserves respect for being The American Dream 'cause he got there through hard work and lots of talent for business. As a racer...well, there was a reason that guys like Bruce McLaren, A.J. Foyt, Chris Amom, and the Jackies (Ickx and Oliver) drove the cars.
