...asking for a friend who is 80 something. 50" is a Good size. Any input will be of help. No need for 3D.

    I suggest Plasma , you get a better deal and a better more realistic picture. Check out Panasonic Offerings in the S series.

    Totally agree with mantis and falconcry72. Plasma is WAY better route to go. But you asked for LED

    If your still looking for LED. Tiger Direct has a 55'' ( LG 55LVL4400 55 Class LED HDTV ) refurb with warrenty $800. Panny Plasma still the better option IMO.

    Are you going to show the same picture on it 24/7? :) Otherwise, not much burn-in, at least not on my Panasonic. If the TV will be in the brightly lit room, LCD/LED panel is most likely a better solution. Otherwise, go with the plasma (Panasonic and Samsung will give better picture quality).
    Oh yeah, not sure about the quality but $/size is most likely the new Sharp LCD.
