Oppo 83 v 93

So here's the deal. I know the 93 does 3D and has apps, but if none of those items mattered to me, what is the difference between the two units if any?
I was looking at getting one solely for the purpose of being able to play just about any disc format I would use and be connected to my AVR via HDMI.
Which one is better, or are they the same with the caveats above? And how does the 83SE play into this mix if at all?
Thanks in advance.

I think my 93 has a better Bluray picture than my 83. Then again, maybe my 83 was getting worn out.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

If you don't want apps and 3D then by all means get the 83 , it was raved about by all who owned it and the reviews where excellent. I have Installed it a few times and thought about buying one myself before I bought my Cambridge 650BD.
If you are running HDMI into a receiver or pre , I see no reason to not get the 83 especially if you can find one at a great price. Then again the price of the 93 isn't expensive enough to not get it. The 95 is the one with the killer analog section if you where going to use that instead of HDMI or at lead for audio for that matter.
I don't think the 93 is better then the 83 in any way but I have not done a side by side or even Installed a 93.Dan

Thanks Dan. Thats kinda what I was hoping to hear. Obviously its easier to find a 83 at a discounted price over a 93 right now.
It also lets me know I can do either one in a pinch.

I just traded up to a 93 and sold my newly repaired 83 off here at the forum. The 93 is more responsive and seems to have a little more revealing picture (mostly only noticeable in movies with film grain, as both models pass a full frequency test chart with flying colors). It also handles MKV and FLAC files, which I have to say I didn't think I'd use much, but I've ended up using quite a bit. The 93 also seems to have a slightly quieter transport, though the 83 wasn't extraordinarily loud to me either. Both players are outstanding, but if upscaling of DVDs is a big issue for you, I think the 93's QDEO chip handles it better than the 83's VRS chip. The BDP-93 is definitely not a purchase I regret. It is a worthy successor to the 83, even though I'll never use it for 3-D material.Equipment list:

You can check out a used Cambridge Audio Azur 650BD which is what I choose over the Oppo 83 years ago. It's a fantastic player with excellent CD playback. SACD and DVD AUDIO are also fantastic. I have used it 6 channel as well as HDMI and both perform top notch.
It's a fast loading player as if it's off and you press eject , the tray opens in 2 seconds. It loads fasts starts fast.
It's a bit more retail price and I'm not sure what used is going for. Probably around 350 -400 but worth every penny.
Denon has some new universal players that are very nice as well as Yamaha. No experience with the Yamaha but I've heard good things. I Installed one of the Denon's and I thought it was a very nice well built player.Dan

I moved up from the 83 to the 93 strictly for it's 3D capability. A bonus that I wasn't expecting was how great it's app's are. Superb wireless streaming & I really like the VUDU movie site. Picture & sound quality are excellent as is the 83's performance. If you have no intention of going 3D or have no use for the app's then I would recommend the 83 & pocket the savings."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up.

Good to know about the upscaling.Lietuvis91 wrote: »I have an s790 on the way too. User comments claim better video quality than oppo models, don't remember which ones exactly. It's worth doing some homework on at least.
It seems they are saying ALL oppo's 83, 93, 95 in the AVSForum thread.... will wait till they get more objective reviews/tests thoughYou can check out a used Cambridge Audio Azur 650BD which is what I choose over the Oppo 83 years ago.
