Other than to drink terrible tasting beer, get drunk and act stupid...why do people celebrate Cinco de Mayo here in the U.S.? I never quite understood it.
No excuses!

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla,[1][2][3][4] where the holiday is called El D?a de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla).[5][6][7] The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride,[8] and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.[9][10] In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Segu?n.[2][11] Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is actually celebrated on September 16.[2][12]

For the first time in the 13 years we've lived in the westside of Portland I didn't hear one obnoxious firework go off after dark by those celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Normally it's 30-45 minutes of explosive insanity, followed an hour of dogs howling themselves to sleep. BTW, we had grilled chicked fajitas and a margarita.

I would like to see Americans celebrate America in Mexico, strap an American flag on the hood of your car and drive down the street..

Probably because it's not a Mexican holiday.

I didn't have any mexican spanish or anything like that but I did drink some German beer in ST. Pauly's Girl which I haven't had in 20 years. It's a nice summer Lager easy to drink , light taste.

There is very few actual Mexican beers. Most of what we think of as Mexican beers are actually German breweries located in Mexico

Its not, I live in New Mexico 05/05 is just a beer holiday... They did the same thing to a religious holiday called St Patty's day. St Valentines day another religious holiday got Hijacked by Hallmark. The list goes on. Corona makes a killing off of Cinco de Mayo. It's amazing what modern marketing can do.

So funny you mentioned this. Was talking to my brother today and he said the same thing. It's all a marketing scam by the liquor and beer companies to kick up sales. We should be seeing Russian Bolshevik day sometime soon in the US so the Vodka companies can spike sales.

Any reason to drink and this country will do it!

I cant wait for the manipulation of Oktoberfest.. It shall be said a glorious battle was won the day a small village (actual two german sisters) in germany fought back against evil Luxembourg and decimated all 5 Luxembourgians. It's celebrated by copious amounts of beer and sausage.

Pappas is pretty good, located in Parkville on Taylor Ave. They have take out and dining; they make a killer crab devilled egg.

Thanks !! No places to eat in in Sykesville/Eldersburg/Ellicot City etc. ? Salerno's maybe? I don't need "the best" place, just "good". May's in Frederick is the only one left in my area after Liberty Road Seafood shut down. :frown:

Regardless of the signifigance, I like the Southwest flavor that the Mexican culture brings to Arizona.
