Harman Kardon 3490

This is just to see what interest if any there would be in my slightly used Harman Kardon 3490. This AVR has been in my office setup for about a year and a half and used very infrequently. I am the second owner. The first was forum member SilverTuner and I do not think he had it for very long. I still have the original box (with a gnawed corner thanks to my dogs). It works perfectly and has no cosmetic defects that I am aware of. This was used to power a set of Monitor 60?s. I do have the remote and the manual (I believe). I might have all the accessories but wouldn?t know without looking.

I am ONLY thinking about selling it because if I get a new AVR downstairs I plan to move my Integra upstairs so I have a backup should my main AVR die, and because I believe its got better DAC's than the HK and better EQ options?..

I was thinking 300ish + shipping. 300 local. Price is somewhat flexible as I cant find a good gauge for what these are selling for used. Obviously would prefer a localish sale. I would be possibly willing to drive a bit to meet up with someone for a face to face exchange.

Nice receiver. I have one that I use as my TV set up in the office. Two sub-outs, and a really nice DAC--better than it should sound at this price! Currently I'm running mine with a set of Energy RC-10s (which the HK likes!) and a Polk sub. Not sure what the going rate on this is "now" as there was a time when some online sellers were having a price war with this series. So 300 may or may not be a little high? I'd check jr.com to see what they're selling it for now!

GLWTS. Good power for all but the more difficult loads. Nice big EL transformer and big caps in there. Pretty good FM reception. And a phono section to boot. Oh, and it has Pre-outs (I ran this with an Adcom GFA-545--stepped up the power to another level); decent as a pre-amp for Video sources!

Great 'starter' for someone, or secondary power for another system.

Hmm. I think you're in luck as there seems to be a shortage of this unit at many sellers. The price at JR is not the actually selling price which is lower (you have to call to get a price). I suspect the real price is closer to 300-350?

But B&H photo is out of stock so they're listing the MSRP 450.

Perhaps HK is updating the 3490? Who knows.

    I love mine.

Eventually, I will upgrade, but I have the squeeze through the DAC. Cable box and DVD player hooked up analog, and my TT through the phono. Pre-outs to the B&K makes it all come together. I don't run subs currently, but two sub outs like cnh said.

It's a do it all product and does it all very nicely. When I upgrade I'll likely keep it for a secondary system.

Yup, I debated listing the Integra but its got good DAC's and does HDMI so I can use it in the office so I dont need another DAC for my computer right now..... that and its a backup if the AVR I get blows for some reason.....

@EndersShadow...&cnh... thanks for all the great tips you guys give in here.Just a note on the H/K3490,yes the price has gone back up on that unit so 300 is a fair price. When they where first out they went for $499.00 and it is one of the better two channel units out there on the cheap. For some reason they put a better DAC in it.I have the H/K3600 and the DAC in it is not the same one in the H/K3490 its the reason the 3490 is still in my two channel set-up.I want a pre-pro, but the 3490 sounds really good in two channel.Oh i did pull the hood off and it has two 15,000 ufs in it plus one 8,300 ufs and a 6,800 and as you guys know already 4 really nice big rail trans and i nice power supply too. That unit tested out at over 200 watts into 4 ohms into both channels.I feel if they added just a lil more on the caps say about 40,000 plus it would give a add on amp a run for its money.

..it does have a +45 high current it really is a nice unit for the price.I would have too spend a lot more too get a much better DAC and with it having pre-outs and two sub hook ups, not bad at all.

i bought one almost 2 summers ago for 160.00 with plastic on face still. got it home. noticed i couldnt hook center speaker up to it. i sold it for 160.00 wow what was i thinking. had paperwork that said 500.+ he was hard up. i wanted surround sound. not knowing what i was doing i sold it. NOW still not knowing what im doing. i wish i had kept it. never even hooked it up. i have avr in living room and cant be bothered with a center speaker. some say its best. but i like 2channel just as well because i listen to music more....good luck selling the reciever. great price for a nice unit. my friend has one. he loves it.

    Good luck with the sale!

I loved my 3490. I moved it on since I wanted to try a tubed pre and I already had my Parasound.

For the money, this unit is a steal. Sounds great, tons of options and connections, and will drive a wide range of speakers.

    Hello EndersShadow,

I am new here and do not have enough posts to send a PM. I am interested in buying your HK3490. Is it still for sale? I live in Alberta, Canada. I will pay for any shipment.

As mentioned, I have the same unit running my TV sound in my office. But I had forgotten how big that remote was. You could use that as a softball bat.

Really, a nice unit Elrond! Don't know what the deal is, shipping to Canada!

    Good luck!

    Hello EndersShadow,

I've found a second hand Hk3490 here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. If I don't hear back from you in a couple of hours, I will go ahead with the one here, close to home.
