you've got quite a mind there!

Sofia Electric "Baby" tube amp - Monitor Audio Silver RX2

I got a steal of a deal on the Sofia which is how I broke into the tube hobby. They are so expensive but one day I'll have better sets of tubes.

    now now.

Is the Sophia a "real" Sofia amp or one of the numeous less expensive knock-offs?

Too bad the real Sofia only uses 6P1P power tubes as there is only one source. The 5670 pre/driver tubes can be swapped and the nice ones are the Raytheon black plate windmill getter, but they aren't cheap.

    It's this one:

    http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/sophia_baby_e.html

if it is a knock off, then it's a full on illegal knock off using the real name fully.

I was wondering if there were tube upgrades. Several sites mentioned upgrading the caps. I bought this used so I have no idea what caps are in there now. The previous owner also gave me additional tubes that aren't used but he had as replacements.

Very well said sir. And by the way to that poster, there is always a solution. Simple as that.

Looks like EL 90's will work, but I'd check for sure. It appears EL 84's are not recommended.

The 6P1P is strictly a Russian made tube, but there are different years and manufacture plants these come from. In my experience the older the better sounding, but it's probably subtle.

Do a search on Ebay for EL90. I would confirm the EL90 can be used in place of the 6P1P, it appears it can.

Are the el90's better quality? If so then I'll be sure to snag some. I have to look up and make sure I get the right ones.

It's subjective, but yes they are "better" because of who makes them. Mullard, Valvo, Sylvania, RCA, Tung Sol, etc, etc. The Russian tubes strictly from a build quality point aren't too bad, espcially if they are older from the 70's and 80's.

Other manufacturer's have a different sound and in some cases a hugely different sound, that's why we tube heads love to roll different tubes, to find the sound we like or just to mix it up a bit.

Don't forget about the 5670 driver tubes, there are some much nicer sounding brands out there as well. Be careful, this rabbit hole goes deep but you can take your time.
