This infuriates me, but it really hits close to home because this is a buddy of mine that I frequent the track with.

I think someone on FB said it best, "Apparently mail carriers are way tougher than the APD. They encounter barking running dogs everyday and rarely even pull their pepper spray, much less a GUN."

    Sorry for your buddies loss,

I have a yellow lab, she wouldn't hurt a flea and couldn't imagine a cop shooting him just because he decides
to bark at a stranger in his territory. Very Sad!

And I agree with that. At the same time, when the dog is in the back yard and then comes around because there's yelling between its owner and a stranger, and then the dog is shot dead on the property, there's an issue. Besides the fact that it was a blue heeler, not a big dog or a breed known to be aggressive.

The dash cam doesn't show anything, but you can hear the whole ordeal.

I'll refrain my thoughts on what I think should happen to this officer, but it's a family forum. I'll just say it should be more than his **** just being fired.

I know policemen's job is tough and unpredictable, but for him to come up with gun pulled instead taser or spray during broad daylight in a decent area for a domestic dispute unprovoked is a little aggressive

I would react the same way causing as many waves as possible if it happened to me

    My condolences to your friend

Although he arrived at the wrong location, he was under the impression that a violent crime was taking place. If it was your sister being choked to death, what would you want the officer to have out and be ready to use? I can tell you pepper spray doesn't work much of the time, especially if someone is high or enraged.

All I can say is that if that crap ever happened to one of my dogs, I might end up shot as well...

I feel terrible for your friend, my dogs are a very large part of my family.

I would flat out loose it if a cop showed up at my house in error and killed one of my dogs.

Funny enough, I've had cops sent to my house by mistake, for dog fighting no less... Not one of the 6 NYS troopers had a single weapon pulled; even with two furious German Shepherds at my door. They were supposed to go to my neighbors house also. My neighbor has 4 boxers, the female was in heat and the males were all wound up causing noise and one of our way too bored and nosey neighbors called the cops thinking we were running a dog fighting ring...

a dog bite me long time ago and I felt scared...if I had a gun I would use it!!!! I know it is sad...but sadder is been in the hospital with a lot of stitches and pain. Remember, even your own dog can attack you or your child....What would you do if a dog attack your child??? I tell you what I would do... I would kill that dog and after that I would cook it and eat it! Beside in China they eat the puppies lol

REMEMBER! Dogs do not think...they just react to actions around them!

First off, I do agree, it is plausible to have your gun out. To POINT it at someone when you don't know if they were committing a crime and they were not threatening is WRECKLESS. Plain and simple. To add to that, he felt the need to use deadly force on a blue heeler...? C'mon. I've been chased by MUCH bigger dogs in the country riding my bike/running when I was a teenager. I never had to shoot any of them. I never got bit, I never even had to use mace, even though I did carry it specifically for dogs. The biggest issue I have with this whole ordeal was he never got bit and he felt that he was in LIFE THREATENING danger to shoot a blue heeler. There's no room for a police officer to be scared to the point to have to use lethal force because he felt he was in life threatening danger because he came to someone's house, on their property, started yelling at the owner, and a dog runs out to see what's going on like any normal dog would do.

Let's compare a dog biting a child to a dog barking at a stranger yelling at their owner. That's apples to apples...

DID YOU SEE the dog just barking and staying put on one spot and not charging? of course the owner of the dog is going to say...ufff my dog does not bite not even his food!!!! my dog was "just" barking. once again, We had to see it to judge if the dog was "just" barking.

Sorry but dogs do think... They can be reactionary, but they are more than capable of problem solving and figuring out whats going on in a situation.

The biggest problem, this cop showed up in error and while on private property shot and killed the property owners dog. This was not in public and he had zero control of an unleashed dog. The dog had every right to be unleashed and be defensive of an overly aggressive officer.

The officer is probably a **** foot who is scared of dogs and way over reacted to a defensive dog.

You can here the cop even say the dog "Tried" to attack me. He was not attacked. He did not make the right choice. What about mail men, gas, water, and power meter readers who typicaly have to enter people yards. They are not allowed to shoot peoples pets. If a person feels threatend by a dog to the point where they shoot it, then police work is not for them.

Who cares if the dog was charging? It's still not life threatening and the officer was on private property. Oh, and an officer would have non-lethal options like mace or a tazer if he really felt like he was going to be harmed. For gods sake, a dog that size can be held down with one hand with ease.

My wife worked with police dispatch years ago, and we contacted a couple of them, they would have never arrived on the seen of a domestic dispute with guns drawn, without provocation, they are trained not to so these situations don't happen...that was the mistake of the officer being in defense mode, when he should have been in reconcile mode as he should have been trained or ignored.

It all depends on the situation. If it were public or a dangerous high tension situation (like a raid) and an out of control large breed, like a mastiff that can outweigh the officer and can have a bite force greater than a lion... Ok.

But this is just pure the officer being out of control.

One of my college roommates had a highschool buddy who was a cop. I hung out with him a couple of times until one day he went on a rant about shooting people's dogs like it was so cool and a game or something. Needless to say I never hung out with him again. I have another buddy of mine who is a former cop and current investigator and he loves dogs as much as I do. My point is you cant lump all cops together for one stupid sob's actions. Having said that, if this had happened to my dog, I would be in jail myself right now. I would't care how long it took, I would have found that no good sorry POS and gave him what he deserves.

^ You're right, you can't lump all cops together. However, when police chief's defend this reckless behavior and then there's no accountability for their actions, then yes I do lump all cops together.

This officer entered a residence without knowing the facts. By training, the "scene" is not secured. In this case the scene is completely innocent and he entered practically with guns a blazing. What if the owner had several relatively mean dogs that were secure in a back yard. The officer would have been in real trouble. That's why the officer's training should have prevented him from just marching into anyone's yard without knowing what was really going on. The opposite happened here... peaceful guy and what was most-likely just a noisy dog being protective (not attacking though).

The message here is clear... police can enter your property and do whatever they want as long as they say it's an accident. There's no repercussions for their actions, and their captains will back them up.

No they can't. Not without probable cause. There also needs to be proof backing up the allegations.

This story is very sad and quite controversial. There are so many factors and variables as to why and what happened. Without knowing, I can't comment much more.

If anything, the owners will sue and probably win.

I agree with you. There definitely needs to be accountability for their actions. I was just trying to say that not every officer operates in or has the mindset that this A**H*** has. Like I said, if anyone ever did this to my dog, I would be uncontrollable.

I have been around Blue Heelers a lot. They are extremely smart and not an aggressive breed. They are herding/working dogs. There is absolutely NO reason this should have happened. I have noticed of late that many cops today seem ill trained for the job they do and tend to have an "I'm in charge" attitude rather than a "to protect and serve" attitude. My niece is married to an ex cop and if he is representative of the whole (and I think he is) then it is not suprising when something like this happens. Sad but not unexpected.

Just playing devil's advocate, as I owned a boxer and still own 4 high maintenance pets...

What if this officer hasn't spent much time around dogs or wasn't familiar with that specific breed? What if he had a bad experience with a dog in the past? And not for nothing, a 50lb dog isn't exactly small. What would it take to justify an officer shooting an animal, would he have to be bit first?

Cops are human beings, they're not robots or machines. No matter how much training they receive, just like the rest of us, they'll never be perfect. You can thank the legal system and modern technology for the "take charge" attitude, but that's a whole other discussion.

It's an unfortunate situation all around and I feel bad for everyone involved, especially Exalted's friend.
