Doc, I'm looking for a new sub.

Doc,

Currently I have a Sound Dynamics THS 3000 subwoofer. It is a 12 inch downfiring sub with a 150 watt mosfet amp. I am not really satisfied with it. I have it in the corner and tried other places but still don't like the sound, it sounds boomy and unaccurate.

I was looking at spending around 750$ canadian at the most. I am looking at the Paradigm PDR-12, I think it is in the price range. What do you think? Is it better than the Velodyne CHT-12? What about the bigger Paradigm subs?

Is there anything anyone else can suggest?

Jerry

I am also in Canada and have Paradigm speakers. I have heard the pdr12 and pw2200(1000cdn). They are both good but you can do better with DIY. I suspect a SVS pci or pb1 isd will also be around that price range (900-1000cdn shipped) and although I haven't heard one, I suspect they will perform better than paradigm.

Without a doubt, Paradigm is the best deal going if you live in Canada and are shopping for a sub. The 2200 and the Servo-15 are excellent.

If you want to import from the US, SVS should be on your short list.

Kyle over at Acoustic Visions is a Adire dealer and you can look several of his sub packages as good alternatives.

Velodyne makes very good subwoofers and are recommended; the CHT series is their entry level sub but is still very decent.

    Dr. Spec ....

You didn't mention the Rava. Lots of very positive revues.

That SVS is a sweetheart, but I thought I would show him the Rava since he appeared to be somewhat price drivin.

I like the ported Dharman for HT and more depth and SPL. But the Rava can't be beat for music.

If you're looking for a sub which is good for both music and movies then look for Velodyne CHT-10. You can't go wrong with Velodyne subs.

    hamzahsh,

how do you think that would compare to the sound dynamics ths 3000 sub i got right now? it is a 12 inch down firing sub with a 150 watt mosfet amp. and with that i still am not satisfied. it isnt as accurate as i would like it to be.

    glemay,

I'm not sure about your sub but one thing I've noticed that it is downfiring and it could be the problem or not. My Velodyne CHT-15 which is a forward firing and it is in the front next to my TV and slightly on the angle of about 60 degrees towards my seating. Velodyne CHT-15 has 750 watts, 300 RMS of pure gut-wrenching power.

I watch movies and listen music and it never sounded boomy to me. The bass is tight and clean and loud enough to rattle things in other rooms of my condo. The bass is clean and natural.

Majority of the subs in the market is front-firing but quality of sub isn't judged by the facing of the driver. It doesn't really matter whether it is front or downward firing. There is no rule for placement either, you can place anywhere you want as long as it sounds good to you.

Try to position your sub, use receiver's crossover. Set it at 80hz and set all speakers to small. Keep the sub volume to no more than 50%. Before you buy another sub keep trying the one you've already.

Since you're from Ontario like myself from Toronto. Visit Future Shop and listen to Velodyne CHT-10 or CHT-12 CHT-15 is not available to listen but they sell it and they deliver it from warehouse.

I bought my Velo CHT-15 from Future Shop and love it so much that I've no words to describe. The CHT-15 is my dream sub and I always wanted it and now I've it. The sub sounds incredible for both music and movies. CHT-10 and CHT-12 both are amazing sub too.

    There is another website called
    http://www.audioreview.com and check out reviews for Velodyne subs which are CT-100, CT-120, CT-150, CHT-10, CHT-12 & CHT-15.

CHT is the new series CT is the old and CHT is better.

    Good luck!

There is a guy over at HTF who owned dual CHT-15's. He now owns three SVS 25-31 PC+ with a fourth on the way (trying to do a B4+ the hard way I guess).

Anyway, he says one 25-31 PC+ equaled his dual CHT-15's down to about 30 Hz. Below 30 Hz, the single 25-31 played louder and ultimately went deeper than the dual CHTs.

The thread is pretty recent if anyone wants to search it. His name is "Steve nn".

I got a Atlantic Technology T70 for $179 its a nice sub for the $$. But at your price range id look at the Velodyne,NHT,PSB,and the Rava. I would have to hear each of them to make a real decision as they are all good. If you want a good sun at a cheap price look at the CSW(cambridge sound works)Newton series also. check those out at ebay in hifi ebay store. Its a online clearing house for CSW stuff and you can get them about 1/2 street price there.
