I don't have a lot to compare it to other than a $50 separate stage I used with an HK avr 240. The phono in the 3490 is better than that one and seems to be pretty decent over all.

Down the line, I will hopefully upgrade to more quality separates, however the 3490 has a ton of features that are of decent quality. Phono, DAC, pre-outs, 2 sub outs.

It fits the bill for the time being.

Here are a couple pics of my new crush.

    Nice!

And you don't have to break the bank for a good phono pre. Rob has a Music Hall P1.2 (~$150). I was surprised how good it sounded.

I'll have to check my Meddle LP. I had a Paul Simon / Still Crazy LP that was crackly on the title track. Had to replace it with a quiet one.

Boy, this thing is sweet. The pro-ject in general is much more solid. The Sony feels like a plastic piece of junk now! (it served me well for its time, however, so I can't be to hard on her)

In addition to better sound, I really notice a more consistant speed. Don't know if that is the difference between belt and direct drive, but if so...never going back. I really noticed it on John Coltrane's 'Love Supreme' album. The opening bars of side 1 have some sustained sax notes that I thought sounded warbly on my old tt. I didn't know it that is how it was supposed to sound, but had a feeling it wasn't.

Just played it on the pro-ject and what an improvement. Solid sounding sustained Supreme!

    Anyways, back to the music...
