I recently purchased a Polk Sound Bar 6000. It was extremely easy to install, but
I get no sound when using my laptop or dvd player.
I connected it with the optical cable to my westinghouse fx430. I have my cable box
connect to the tv with standard coax and my laptop/dvd are connected via hdmi.
My tv settings are as follows:
MTS: - Stereo
Speaker - external
The system works great when watching cable but as soon as I switch to hdmi, no sound.
Please advise

Hello Joldens,
Thanks for posting on Polk's forum. You would want to check with Westinghouse customer service to make sure the TV is outputting a digital audio signal when playing an external digital source. The way to test the Polk is to try using the digital cable between the speaker and any digital device with an optical audio output.

The TV might not be outputting sound when using the HDMI connection. In the menus, do you have the option to choose from PCM or Dolby Digital? Also, try going directly from the player to the Surroundbar, as Kenneth Swauger suggested.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Ok, it does work connecting the bar directly to the dvd player. So, this eliminates the Polk system from being the cause the my
problems. The TV does not have PCM or Dolby options. It only has digital or analog for the HDMI port. Neither of which made a
difference.
My setup is as follows:
TV: Westinghouse TX-47F430s
DVD: xv-n670
Surround: Polk Sound bar 6000
HDMI: actiontec wireless HDMI
HDMI Splitter: Generic
HDMI Cables: Generic
I have tried connect the laptop/dvd directly to the TV via HDMI and there was no change.
I contacted the nice people at westinghouse and they were at a loss. The rep mentions something about
the HDMI cable being too strong, but he wasn't sure.
The whole concept behind the setup was to have all my wires tucked into the wall, my dvd right of the couch and
to run a HDMI cable behind the couch in case I wanted to hook the laptop to it. The TV is currently mounted to the
wall and there is a closet behind the wall where my cable box and wireless HDMI router reside. No wires no plugs, just a
nice clean look as if the surround and tv were part of the wall. Unfortunately, I will not be able to get the full effect of
the movie experience until I find a way get the optical goodness to work. -

Hello,
I was able to read the Westinghouse owner's manual for your set and there doesn't seem to be any problems that I can see. The manual shows both an analogue and a S/PIDIF digital connection. When you plug the TOSLINK cable into the TV take the other end of the cable and see if you can see a red light when reflected on the palm of your hand? Don't look directly at the end of the cable, let the light shine against on something and look at the reflection. Make sure the end of the TOSLINK cable is snug into the TV and the Polk. That should route the external digital audio signal through the TV and into the Polk.

Yes, it lights right up, works with cable and directly to the dvd player. The problem is when I hook an HDMI device to the TV no audio goes to the sound bar.

Hello,
The only thing that comes to mind is that the TV doesn't route a digital audio signal from an external source, for some reason. While rare, it does happen. You can try using the analogue signal from the TV into the SB via input #2 and make a digital connection between the DVD player and the SB. This would mean changing the SB input from #1 (digital) to #2 (analogue) whenever switching sources. Or, the dealer who sold you the TV might be able to exchange it for another model that does route a digital audio signal?
Cheers, Ken
