The M&K Takes a step up to the plate

Well, i recently was just fed up with all this terrible bass that never was there and never could keep up. Now I'm turning it down!

How is this so? It is not my mind, the SPL meter does not lie! It is running 4-5db louder! it sounds cleaner, fuller, dosn't bottum out as much or anything! I also have bass at all volumes!

The secret?

Speaker wire! Lots of it! Does your preamp have a crappy sub out? Use speaker wire! The difference.....HUGE! The M&K hits 110db continuously, staying blended. This is 4 db above its usual rating with a LFE cable. This is at the same regular volume, just this time with speaker wire. Works well. If you have no tried this, I would definetely try it!

    PS: When I say 'regular' volume, I mean 102db with the speakers :D

    Lets see....tiny room, sub in one corner, meter in opposite...Even my cheapy MTX SW1 can sound loud as **** like that.

    If he's using music that never touches 40 hz and hes hitting a room induced peak, it's possible.

    {also remember that you can run it at ungodly high THD and still call it a "reading"}

    {I think rat shack meters have a 2dB or so accuracy, so it could be a high 113, too}

    Well when I took that reading, I was playing Korn - Children of the Korn. Anyone that is familiar with that song will tell you the entire song is bass heavy. With the LFE cable my max reading was 111db. With the speaker wire, as you can see was 115

    Don't believe that the sub can draw from the mains' amp's output. However, running two speaker wires vs. one cable willl yield a 3 dB input boost... about what Sid is seeing.

    Now as to why the M&K is not bottoming out??? I dunno, that should be a function of output... Unless Sid is still running his mains "small" and the sub is not only seeing upper bass frequencies instead of the deep bass the cable was feeding it...

    Well you can't hear the M&K bottum when it does, it's a brisk noise that is only heard when the mains are off. So if it is there it's low enough that the mains drown it out.

    I am running the mains on large, sub off. Speaker wire everywhere. Subwoofer still plugged in, running off of it's own amp and volume control. Crossover set at 65hz (vs the old 120hz xover because of the 100hz internal receiver crossover, this is one reason why the subwoofer runs much easier now). I am greatly satisfied with the results I found, and will probally continue to wire about every subwoofer I do like this.

    115db?

    Well, don't worry, listening to stuff that loud, you won't be listening for long.

    That explains it... you unburdoned the M&K of the upper bass and are getting double duty in the 40 (or so) to 65 Hz range with the "stacks" on large... Well done.

    But do take the hearing cautions you are getting seriously. Even a steady diet of 100 dB sessions are going to slowly take their toll...

    I did that to see how loud I can go. I usually dont listen above 96-98 db. *In Bass* and 92-93 in the mid-high level
