Used to be, you could pull in, the attendant filled the car with 22 gals. of gas, washed the windshield, checked all the fluids and tires; while the family went inside and got four Cokes (in the bottle), HoneyBuns, a pack of cigarettes and a free map. Most of the time, you would get change back from your ten dollar bill.

Today, you would be lucky to get change back from a C-note.

Jesse, remember they actually had bays and worked on cars too. Ah the old days. The station I worked at as a teen was full service, we were one of the last ones in St. Louis.

I do Steve. My first job (part time) at 16 was a gas jockey at a SERVICE station.

Yeah, that's right. Gulf had a pair of joined orange plastic horseshoes you could put on the rear of your car. It was to advertise their no-knock gas. Esso had a fake tiger's tail people would have hanging out the back of the trunk. Sunoco had pumps where you could dial the octane you wanted, up to 104 racing fuel, IIRC.

Having grown up in Pa. on the Jersey border with my father working in Jersey it was interesting to watch the transition that left Jersey as one of the only states left for this while the Pa. side let you pump your own.

Even so, when we moved to N.J. for a year or so in 2000 it was kinda nice to have someone providing that service. I understand where John is coming from above.

Though I have driven in Oregon once or twice, I really didn't remember that it too was a no pump state.

So what happens if you pump your own gas? They lock you up?

Also, what was the purpose behind passing a law such as that anyhow?

Actually, they will call the cops and you will get a fine.

As for the purpose...I'm not positive. I know there are probably 50 people in my smallish town alone employed because of this law. Add up everyone else, and you're looking at thousands of jobs, which is never a bad thing.

Interesting. Historically, there were only two industries in which the customer paid for goods/services before delivery - fast foods and prostitution.

Now, I guess, there are three.

There might actually be 4, if you consider marriage as an industry (although it's technically an institution).

on the plus side - gas is cheap in New Jersey.
I am always amused by the lines in the last NJ gas on the Palisades Pkwy before NY. A peak at the gas prices in the station just across the NY border reveals why.

I always stop at the Vince Lombardi rest area on the NJ TPK, myself. It's a tradition or us. Lovely place.

NJ uses "safety" as a reason but in reality it's for tax revenue purposes. They want their share and they want all of it by God!

I don't know what Oregon's reason is and nobody else seems to know either so I guess it's chalked up to Oregon think it's residents are idiots.

Nope, because the pump doesn't turn on unless you pre pay, so it's impossible to pump without paying first.

I never go in. Run the debit, pump the gas, leave. No overpriced 7-11 style crap for me.
A lot of local super markets have loyalty cards, and you earn gas discounts. Saved 90 cents per
gallon on my last fill at their gas station.

I go through the cities a lot on my way to PARK Rapids, I've come across a station or two in St Cloud, even up in Brainerd that make you prepay, once you get north of there, you dont see prepay. I guess those that live in Coon Rapids have to deal with it, because of the drive offs how unfortunate.

If so, I couldn't live there ever. Pet peeve or annoyance... I'm the only person who fills up my car so I ensure no one scrapes, scratches or leaks fuel onto my paint like the kids who work at these gas stations who don't care.

Full service stations are a joke now a days.

If you have a nice car or a spendy Bike they let you pump it. I remember many times my dad and I would stop at a station on his bike that the attendant wouldn't let him pump his own. We would go find another station. I can only recall 1 time he had to let some kid pump his fuel and the kid wrapped the nozzle with like 5 rags before he got close to dads bike. LOL.

Around here it's mandated town by town. Pumps are set up to go either pay at pump, or the
never works "prepay". The pump doesn't turn on until enabled, so enforcement is pretty
straight forward and drive offs STOP. Once you start paying at the pump, You'll like it.
Let the guys at the counter sell lotto tickets and tall boys. I'll get my gas and get out.
I think around here the drive off rate was pretty bad. And the number of unlicensed and
    uninsured are also mind numbing.

Tall boys at the counter? You all are spoiled! We must be a couple steps behind Utah. lol - although the last time I was there, at least they sell beer at gas stations too (went to the liqour store to find out it's for liquor.... dummy me)

This whole topic is one I've got mixed feelings on. Part of me says who cares - I've been paying at the pump for years. Why wouldn't anyone actually? I guess this will be somewhat of a nuisance when I gotta run in for that gallon of milk, but what can you do?

The other side of me thinks it's odd that the city has stepped in and told everyone what to do. If you want prepay, then do it. There are plenty of stations around that have the pumps by the road prepay, or prepay after 6pm, etc. Maybe they suppose that if 1 station goes to prepay, the business will just go across the street - so just impliment it for everyone to be fair? Doesn't sound right to me, but what do I know. I just pay the taxes.

I see a lot of people talking about not being able to pump your own gas. That's absurd! I would consider that to the GOP stepping in and saying I can no longer work on my car in the garage because it's not safe, and they aren't getting as much money out of me as they could if I took my car to the dealer for oil changes and such.

My mom has a bunch of gas station glasses too.

She gave me a set she never used when I moved in to my first apartment 'cause I didn't have any glasses.

She has some serving plates and stuff too.

My dad used to do electronics service for TRW when digital cash registers and ATMs were just coming out. So he drove all over creation and was filling up every other day. He used to come home with the glasses and plates and stuff all the time.

It baffles me at times what people deem worthy of saving. My mother in-law saved pie tins, back when they were made of tin, not foil like today. You open a kitchen cabinet and all these pie tins come flying out at ya.

I think more so it was that depression era mentality where you saved everything and anything.

I doubt that. If a business were worried about being sued by a customer then they would never let a customer do the work. On the other hand, if a business lets a customer do the work, and still charges the same price, then they make more money since their expenses (employee salaries, etc.) are lower.
