PSW125 howls

Pretty new to sub woofers since I have Altec Voice of the Theater A7-500's. But we decided to get one and bought the PSW125-12. It has nice base although I don't know if it is much better than the VOTT.
Anyway it has started ?howling? just sitting there even when the Harmon Kardon receiver is off. It woke us up last night all by itself. It sounds like microphone feedback but I don't know. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
Thanks for posting on Polk's forum, sorry there's a problem with your subwoofer. It is possible the problem could be with the sub, but it could also be the connecting cable. One of the ways to check a sub is to remove the sub-cable and bring another audio source, such as a DVD/CD player over to where you have the sub. Then run a good quality cable from either the right or left audio output, of the player, to any input on the sub. Begin playing a CD and adjust the sub's volume for a moderate playing level. Let the complete CD play and let the unit go into the standby mode and see if you hear any repeats of the howling sounds.
    Regards, Ken

Thanks for the quick response but it "howls" all on it's own. It howls with no cable connected just being turned on. It does not seem to be in the volume control either no matter where it is set.

    Hello,
In that case there is a problem with the bass amplifier. It would be best to return it to where you purchased it, or contact Polk's CS department at 1-800-377-7655 or via email at polkcs@polkaudio.com.
Or, you may remove the bass amplifier and send it to Polk's service facility for exchange. If you want to do this I can give specific instructions.
    Regards, Ken

I bought it through Amazon so returning it may not be the easiest option. I can probably remove the amplifier which would probably
ship better than the whole speaker. I was tool and die maker for 40 years so I have “some” mechanical skills.
    Please send instructions.

I did call Polk Audio CS and told them I wasn't real happy with shipping the sub-woofer. So, they sent me a new amplifier board whichI installed in less than ten minutes. Plus they had it to me in three days.
Now I don't know about you but I would say that is fantastic service.
The sub has been working for several days now and it is quiet when it is supposed to be and loud when it is supposed to be.
I wish all companies were as good as Polk Audio. You get a Gold Star!
