So I'm looking at Mac machines and I run into this company who builds mac based systems for way less than what apple is charging.

I've seen companies like this in the past and am wondering if they are legitimate or not. Anybody have any feedback on them?

Custom Hackintosh's... As long as the hardware is compatible with OSX, it can be done.

    Do a search for Hackintosh

Yea I've seen them before. I'm just wondering if they are legit or not. Can the OSX be updated etc? Is their any cons to purchasing this type of system?

That I can't comment on because I simply don't know. I'm not a Mac guy but there are lots here who will chime in I'm sure.

Edit: I'm going to go on a limb and say yes. As long as there is no hardware conflicts I don't see why you couldn't upgrade.

Wow, just did more research and it seems that it's illegal to do?!

The are against the software agreement with any Mac OS. Apple may make efforts to make software updates incompatible with non-Apple Macs, but more likely they are just not going to make any efforts to make sure your computer will work. If you computer does not work after an update, to them that is a feature and not a bug.

Apple has gone after companies that have made these in the past (think Psystar).

I believe Apple stopped allowing companies to use their OS on "clone" machines a long time ago. Their used to be a company called Power Computing that sold Mac clones. And looking at some of these others it sure looks like they are purely hacks, and as mentioned probably illegal.

Apple will only allow its OS to be installed on legit Apple Macs as far as I know.

I would just buy a Mac Pro knowing that there will be no headache from using a Mac clone.

The hardware is not equivalent. Mac Pros use Intel Xeon processors, which are for server environments vs. the Core i7 that Hackintosh uses. Also, the Mac Pro has ECC RAM.

Although the specs may be equal, the two systems are different.

Price out a Dell Precision workstation or a PowerEdge server and tell me how much it costs.

Just priced out a Precision T3500 with 6 core Xeon CPU and 24GB of RAM, with four U2711 monitors - came out to just over $10k. But their HDD options are different from the Mac.

Oddly enough a 6 core Mac Pro with 24GB of RAM, 8TB, four Apple Cinema Display - came out to $11k.

I'd honestly just build it myself and then throw OSX on it myself if i wanted a Mac that bad. But that sortof negates the purpose of this thread, i suppose.

Interesting. On the http://www.mediaworkstations.net/ site on the bottom right the 12 core hackintosh is using Xeon processors, the e5645 - and says it's 20% faster than Apple's fastest 12 core. Doesn't say ECC RAM but dang that's cheap. Apple's fastest Mac Pro - that's over $8k.

I look at it this way , if you want a Mac buy a Mac , if you can't afford a Mac or don't want to spend that kind of money on a computer then buy a nice PC Windows Machine. Nothing wrong with a PC or Windows as long as you be careful.

There are plenty of reasons why Mac's cost what they do not to mention there stock is over 500 per share and have more money on hand then the US Treasure. They are doing many things right and many companies in the world could learn a thing or 2 from them. You want a piece of that world , pay my friend.
