Bose 901 Series Iv With EQ - refoamed drivers

Bose haters move along now......:-)
Like many of the older Polkies, I grew up with the gear of the 70's, 80's and 90's. As time has gone by I have bought (and sold) a lot of the 'older' gear I auditioned and sometimes lusted after in the old audio boutiques. Kind of a way to reclaim part of my mis-spent youth I guess. Couldn't / didn't own it then, but I can now.
In that 'quest' I came across these from a local guy I bought some gear from a couple years ago. He bought them new back in the day and had moved on up the food chain, so they were in his basement -in the original boxes. I bought them because they are complete and very nice, but mostly because I had never owned a set. Stands, boxes, EQ, original invoice, etc., etc. Cosmetically as good as I have seen - screws for the stands never even installed. The walnut finish is original and could use a good oiling, but I haven't gotten that far.
As with almost all original 901's they needed the surrounds replaced. It was winter, I needed a project, so I invested the time to refoam them and replaced one driver with a refurbed unit. Hooked them up to my Pioneer SX-780 to achieve that 'period' sound and have been surprised how good they sound together. Judged by the gear of the period, not bad. I used a CD player as a source and paired with the EQ I was able to get decent sound out of them, and a lot of it. I've probably played them for 10 hours total.
Anyway, I've had my fun and I have yet another project in mind.
Looks like around $400 plus shipping and PP fees is a good price, but make me an offer if you have some interest. I can email you some pix if you have serious interest. PM please for offers, etc.

Cheaper targets are out there.
BTW, I have a Glock 27 - four actually - and like the .40 cal round. Nice compromise between the .45 and 9mm. GA is a concealed carry state and the baby Glocks fit the bill pretty well.My 7.4.4 DIY 4k Home Theater:

I've got the 36, which is the little Glock with the big rounds. I'm not too into guns but I do need to protect my interconnect wires.
Good luck with the sale.

yes, I am a Bose hater!!! Save money and get "real" speakers not just the name to show people that you are smart and got the best speakers. The RTi series "WILL BEAT" any Bose speakers and you will still have money in your pockets.Make it simple...Make it better! -

FWIW, I had the IV's back in the mid 80's. I then got the newer VI's, thinking they would be better. I was wrong. The series IV was much better. Actually, not a bad speaker, but only if set up correctly. Set up poorly, which 99% of them likely are, they are not so good.Jeff

Interesting review of the 901's from Stereophile that both fans and haters should read:
http://www.stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/425/
I recall being impressed by the richness of the sound that the Bose 901's produced when i first heard them in the 70's. And I find it remarkable that even the haters cannot appreciate the technological pioneering that these speakers represent. It wasn't until decades later that other vendors would use multiple smaller drivers rather than one large one (in large part motivated by wanting to have narrow cabinets but still produce deep base). I am not a fan of the boom and hiss sound of the Acoustimass systems because i just don't think they are musical, and I find the Wave products to have a highly processed sound due to electronic trickery (the Polk I-Sonic is far more musical but also a lot less attractive in my opinion), but the 901's are an entirely different animal. Different people like different sound. There is no reason to hate. -

I'm no real Bose fan either, but I did find these to sound better than I expected, especially when compared to other speaker in their age range. My 7.4.4 DIY 4k Home Theater:

I rebuild 901s for a living, as well as other brands. That's an excellent price for anyone looking for a complete setup. The IVs IMHO are the best of all the ported series. They can't match the Series IIs of course, but they're much more efficient.Home Theater/2 Channel:
