I just spent the last hour and a half listening to Black Napkins on youtube. Check out live in Detroit 1976 and Sydney 1976. Amazing guitar work. Check it out. Sorry, don't know how to make a link for it.

Zappa takes up some space in my Cd rack, and the Vinyl Pile, and the big box of cassettes I still enjoy listening to, so I enjoy some Frank every now and then, hell of a guitar player, he can make that SG sing thats for sure.

You ought to check out wncw.org to see if they webcast their "Frank on Friday" show.
It's local for me so I can hear it over the air at noon every Friday, excellent.

Been a fan since 1969. Think I have been to at least 30 concerts. Some times two, early and late, and they were never the same.

Got all the LPs and CDs.

Wish he was still playing tunes and commenting on the crazy and stupid world we live in.

Been a fan since 1970. Only seen him 3 times. IMO the most talented musiician in my lifetime. To bad people can't get past his lyrics to actually listen to the music. I find myself listening to more and more of his strictly music albums. Has anyone else noticed the price jump on his cd's in the past year. I recently started going to Barfco Swill to get the new stuff the estate is releasing.

I always loved his lyrics because they cut to the bone.

    For example:
    What's the ugliest
    Part of your body?
    What's the ugliest
    Part of your body?
    Some say your nose
    Some say your toes
    But I think it's
    YOUR MIND
I think it's your mind, woo woo

Don't get me wrong. I like his lyrics too. I'm talkin about the general public and the Tipper Gore gang that absolutly hated him.

Got it, I some times wished for more notes and less vocals, but you need a break with some laughs.

I noticed the OP mentioned "Black Napkins", I'm curious to know if "Pink Napkins" from Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar is a variation on that song or a totally different song.

Maybe yes to both. I had a hard time with the shut up N play your guitar CDs. To intense for me, with no breaks. There were a few of those CDs.

I Gotta agree with bikezappa. Hard to call that one, it is a variation but with a much more mellow tone. IMO

Zappa is one of the worst artists of another generation. Unless someone can turn me onto a burn of something that should and would perhaps change my mind, I;ve yet to hear anything delightful. And yes, George Grand, you can suck it on this subject. XO XO

My version of Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar was a 3 cd set, and after doing some research after I posted my question I found this and thought I would share.

"Most solos on the album are culled from performances of another song. The three title tracks are derived from successive renditions of "Inca Roads"; various other solos were taken from readings of "Conehead", "Easy Meat", "The Illinois **** Bandit", "City of Tiny Lites", "Black Napkins", "The Torture Never Stops", "Chunga's Revenge", and "A Pound for a Brown on the Bus". "Ship Ahoy" was the coda from a performance of "Zoot Allures" the first part of which appears on You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 3."

Each disc was referred to as follows: Disc 1 (Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar), Disc 2 (Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Some More), Disc 3 (Return of the Son of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar).

    @dorokusai
Seeing as this thread is skewed to his guitar work and I can see how some folks might not enjoy it I would suggest listening to Joe's Garage Acts 1-2-3: In my opinion a great concept/rock opera album that tells a great story about the pitfalls of aspiring and then becoming a musician and all the trappings that come with that. It's very satirical yet also a huge FU to censorship and as mentioned earlier the Tipper Gore types.

There's no accounting for taste friend.

You would do better than to take advice from this crowd anyway. A good example of what I'm talking about would be the suggestion to purchase "Absolutely Free" if you like doowop. An interesting suggestion seeing how "Absolutely Free" contains no doowop.

If you want DooWop check out "Rubin and the Jets". It has many cretin love songs to sing along with.

Before you "check out" anything, ask yourself this important question. "Am I a mosh pitter, or am I an appreciator of thinking man's music?"

Damn, I'm knee deep in mud. Did it rain here last night?

    Your downers are gone
They was all you could get
    To ease your mind
    And your deep regret
    Over Charlie's mouth
    So enormous 'n wet
Now all you got Is your TV set
    You turn it on
    And watch and dream
    A dream of love
    On the tiny screen
    And what do you see
    As you lay in bed?
    It's a bald kinda girl
    With a pointed head
    Oh no...

From My Favorite Zappa Album. You are what you is!
I can listen to this whole album start to finish at almost anytime. Not sure why this album almost never gets mentioned.
I got static in my head
