Home Theatre Surround Sound Issue

I recently installed a 5.1 system with my new Vizio TV and Denon 1213 AVR with Polk speakers and SW all around. All is excellent with cd music and Bluray movies for over 1 month. However, I wanted sound to come from my center channel speaker, as well, while watching TV through AT&T u-Verse. I went into my cable box menu and unclicked the "stereo" box and checked the "surround sound" box. I now get chopped sound coming from the speakers about every 15 seconds like I have a bad speaker wire connection. I checked all my connections and saw that everything was secure. I changed the setting back to standard stereo and the sound is perfect comming from the R&L front speakers. Any idea why this is happening? All connections are through HDMI cable.
Thanks.

When its creating the sound is it coming from ALL speakers, or just the center? Also have you tried swapping out the HDMI cable running from your Uverse box to the Denon?

The new "surround sound" comes out of all the speakers including the rear satelittes. Also, I just installed new HDMI cables on all my equipment.

If your movies and everything else sound fine and just the Uverse is the problem I would check the settings for that source in your Denon. See if its decoding the format right, and if so it sounds like your Uverse box is going bad.

I have Uverse and havent had this problem at all with my reciever.
